Purpose of Announcement

EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL TWO (2) CURRENT EAST JEFFERSON VACANCIES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF CENTRAL GARAGE AND FOR FUTURE VACANCIES AS THEY OCCUR.
Kind of Work

Under the supervision of a journeyman mechanic, in shops and on the road, repairs and replaces automotive components of vehicles. This position performs the less complex or demanding automotive work such as engine tune-ups, changing oil and filters and brake-jobs. Provides general maintenance such as inspecting the oil, transmission and water in vehicles and equipment. Cleans the work area and parts. Assist mechanics in minor repairs and inspections. Employee ins this position will also be responsible for changing tires, replacing head lamps and wiper blades, and ordering parts for vehicle and equipment repairs. This position is also an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or her designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.

For the current vacancy in the Central Garage Tire Shop, the position is responsible for tire replacement and repair on a wide variety of vehicles such as: cars, trucks, crew vans, back-hoes, fire trucks, Vac-cons, etc.
Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination

Applicants must meet ONE of the following four options:

1. Current employment and permanent civil service status with Jefferson Parish; plus, at least six (6) months of experience assisting with the repair/maintenance of vehicles or motorized equipment in the Department of Fleet Management.

2. Current employment with Jefferson Parish and permanent civil service status as a Trades Helper, with at least six (6) months of experience assisting with the repair/maintenance of vehicles or motorized equipment.

3. At least one (1) year of experience assisting with the repair/maintenance of vehicles or motorized equipment.

4. At least nine (9) hours of coursework in Motor Vehicle Technology or a related field from an accredited college or vocational school.
Kind of Examination

(ENTRANCE AND PROMOTIONAL)

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. The information is subject to verification and the Personnel Department reserves the right to determine the quality and quantity of education and experience claimed for credit.

Employees accumulate one half day of paid vacation for every two weeks worked.

An HMO medical insurance plan is avalable for employees and their
dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of
the premiums for dependents.

A Flexible Benefits Plan
Employees have the opportunity to save money by paying for health
insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings
Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available.

Retirement
Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees' Retirement
System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after
January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service
is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with
10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.

Tenure Payment
Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year.
Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.

Deferred Compensation Plan(457b plan)
Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer
up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings.
Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without
penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions 1-877-###-####.

Special leaves of absence for military service, maternity leave, etc.
