Job Description:
The Controller is responsible for all accounting operations of the University. The Controller reports directly to the Vice President for Business & Finance and works closely with the VP in formulating and administering policy and procedures pertaining to all fiscal matters of the University. This is an exempt administrative position. This position is appointed by the President and serves at the will of the President.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Some of the major responsibilities include:

1. Responsible for the oversight of the Business Office personnel and central accounting functions of the University, the assignment of new accounts, and all reconciliations.

2. Responsible for the preparation of all financial statements, to include quarterly financial statements, the annual audit, A-133, NCAA, 990, 990T, etc.

3. Provides guidance to the budget process and manages the budget of the Business Office. Mentors employees as needed.

4. Manages the University's treasury function which includes operating cash, short-term investments, and banking relationships (e.g. direct deposit, credit card services, campus branch banking, etc.)

5. Provides information to rating agencies and bond holders and prepares surveys as needed (e.g. NACUBO endowment survey, etc.).

6. Attends the following Board of Trustees committee meetings (and presents and assists as needed): Master Planning and Development Committee and Audit Committee.

7. Manages University debt, to include bonds, letters of credit, lines of credit, leases, and bond covenants. Regularly interacts with lenders, creditors, rating agencies and government agencies.

8. Administers faculty, departmental, foundation, federal and state (MICUA) grants.

9. Coordinates with the Development Office regarding accounting for all gifts, to include stock, real property, annuities, and pledges receivable.

10. Oversight of draws from GAPS system for student loans and federal awards.

11. Serves as a advisor to our Financial Aid Department and as a resource person for the Financial Advisory Committee.

12. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements: Education, Experience and Skills:

The appointed individual will:

  • Have a Bachelor's degree. Master's degree recommended. CPA preferred.
  • Have at least 10 years of accounting experience required, preferably in an educational or not-for-profit environment.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of, and experience in, accounting methodology, business procedures, financial spreadsheets, and computerized financial data base management is required.
  • Possess exceptional communication, organizational, managerial, team-building, and leadership skills
