The ARC Research Services unit provides real-time technical advanced in vivo services to push research from concept to publication in record time by removing training and skill barriers for our researchers at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This happens with a vastly diverse group of talented and skillful technologists ready to execute projects and studies. There is a need for a supervisor to harness this talent and deploy them as needed. They work with every department represented at St. Jude.

The ARC Research Services Supervisor directly supervises the operations, resources, and staff of the ARC Research Services unit of the Animal Resource Center. The areas of responsibility include the delegation of technical in-vivo work for pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic projects by working directly with members of the research community for acute and chronic murine studies. The project work is balanced with production colony management, technical requests, and hands-on training. The supervisor will provide oversight and leadership to other areas that include, but are not limited to surgical areas, quarantine, ABSL-2 area, multi-species work, advanced breeding colony support, and standard operational procedure development.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet with researchers to design in vivo studies
  • Develop training and manage use of BASi Culex machine
  • Plan, coordinate, direct, and oversee daily operations of research services staff to meet department and customer requirements.
  • Define and monitor operating plans for the area, including workflow, resources, and personnel scheduling.
  • Guide performance of research services (e.g., breeding colony management) in terms of quality, timelines, and technical acumen.
  • Assist in the development of SOPs and process guidelines in each area.
  • Identify, propose, and implement process improvements and new approaches/techniques within each area.
  • Track and report metrics for different areas to leadership teams.
  • Assist in planning and monitoring of overall team budgets.
  • Plan and deliver ongoing training and skill-building programs for all technicians/personnel in research services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Associate's Degree preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum Requirement: 8+ years of experience in a professional animal care facility (e.g. zoo, veterinary clinic, laboratory animal facility with High school diploma/GED.
  • Experience Exception: 6+ years with Associate's degree
  • Experience Exception: 4+ years with Bachelor's degree.
  • Significant technical experience within own area (e.g. animal handling and restraint; animal health monitoring; operation and sanitization/sterilization of equipment; sample collection).
  • Experience managing/guiding ARC software systems and databases for maintenance/review/analysis of records/data/reports.
  • Experience working with/implementing regulations and policies regarding animal research (e.g. ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, USDA Animal Welfare Act and Regulations).
  • Demonstrated success managing teams/ resources/ timelines.
  • Experience providing broader mentorship within and across teams.
  • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $65,520 - $114,400 per year for the role of Supervisor Research Services.
