The Opportunity: The Maintenance Mechanic 2 performs journey-level building maintenance work including a variety of other skilled trade work primarily at the Mount Vernon Campus, but may work at other locations in the Skagit Valley College district. This position will maintain clean and orderly work areas including the maintenance shop, electrical rooms, and mechanical rooms. This position performs maintenance work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of Skagit Valley College buildings, utility distribution systems, College property, and equipment. Other skilled trades work performed at the journey-level includes the areas of electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, grounds, and general maintenance/repair work. The Maintenance Mechanic will serve as a liaison between vendors/contractors and the Maintenance Specialist 4 as well as the Assistant Director of Facilities as issues arise. This position will be required to use discretion and independent judgment to resolve occasional emergency situations.

This is a full-time, benefit eligible classified position, working at the Mount Vernon Campus in Mount Vernon, WA. Hours of work are typically Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

  • Electrical
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, repair, replace, install, modify electrical distribution equipment;
  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical connections, switches, circuits, electrical equipment, thermostats and valves;
  • Isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors and other electrical equipment using testing instruments such as ammeter, ohmmeter, voltmeter;
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical equipment systems, instruments, control systems or components;
  • Make related mechanical repair necessary to effect electrical, electronic and/or air conditioning repairs;
  • Replace fixture, outlets, switches, breakers, and install wiring;
  • Install, repair electrical conduit, cables, piping, tubing including connections, controls and grounding as necessary;

HVAC

  • Install, maintain, and repair mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and other HVAC related equipment and devices;
  • Inspect, replace, or repair belts in exhaust fans, air handlers, terminal units, and heat pumps;
  • Program thermostats, repair, and replace components;
  • Replace filters and belts and troubleshoot air handlers, terminal units, Variable Air Volume boxes, and heat pumps;
  • Inspect thermostats, repair, and replace components.

Plumbing

  • Winterize buildings, turn on meters, replace and wire actuators and valves;
  • Perform mainline repairs;
  • Replace sprinkler heads;
  • Diagnose solenoid and flush valves and repair and/or replace components for toilets and urinals;
  • Test lines to ensure proper waste flow;
  • Repair flush valves of toilet by diagnosing flush diaphragm and replacing;
  • Repair and/or replace fixtures such as faucets, gaskets, seals, lines, auto sensors, and mixing valves;
  • Operate backhoe to dig up sewer lines, snake drains, both indoors and outdoors, repair and replace water lines;
  • Cut, replace, and sweat copper pipes to repair leaks or install new copper piping; Use sharp fittings and valves to upgrade old copper lines with pex tubing;
  • Install drinking fountains and troubleshoot, repair, and or/replace components.

Carpentry

  • Repair cabinets and replace cabinet components;
  • Install, repair and replace automatic door openers by accessing actuators and circuit boards, and adjust settings appropriately;
  • Respond to work requests for general repair to repair furnishings, cabinets, office furniture, chairs, blinds, etc.;
  • Locate roof leaks, clear drains, calk, and edge roofing;
  • May replace handles and locks and install hardware;
  • Other general installation as assigned by work requests such as moving furniture, assembling furniture or equipment, hanging whiteboards, wall fixtures, and assembling shelves, etc.

General repair, mechanical, grounds, and other duties

  • Monitor and repair safety and environmental control equipment to ensure building systems and equipment are operating in satisfactory condition;
  • Conduct daily work on computers including email usage and utilizing software program DirectLine Megamation to accurately depict work hours and labor functions;
  • Repair doors/door hardware, windows and screens, floors and floor coverings, walls and painted surfaces, windows, roofing, sidewalks and walkways, etc.;
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance tasks on all facilities, machines and equipment;
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned;
  • Grounds work including field maintenance, pressure washing, dump runs, some tree work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and/or understanding of:

  • Basic computer usage and functions;
  • Basic plumbing concepts and practices;
  • Basic electrical concepts and practices;
  • Basic carpentry;
  • Basic HVAC maintenance;
  • Basic mechanical systems of commercial buildings;
  • Equipment repair and maintenance;
  • Routine maintenance procedures;
  • Chemicals and Safety Data Sheets (SDS);
  • Trade safety laws, regulations, standards, and practices while maintaining and inspecting;
  • Personal Protective Equipment;
  • Intermediate understanding of troubleshooting small electronic equipment.

Skills

  • Skilled in operating hand, power and specialized tools.

Ability to

  • Perform minor electrical repairs and replacements;
  • Perform minor plumbing repairs and replacements;
  • Perform minor carpentry repairs on buildings;
  • Perform repairs on building mechanical systems;
  • Perform equipment repairs;
  • Operate hand and power tools related to regular maintenance duties;
  • Operate equipment such as tractors, forklifts, lawn maintenance equipment, and various man-lifts;
  • Document work hours and capture labor functions accurately using a computer within the software based program DirectLine Megamation;
  • Read and interpret blueprints;
  • Assess building repair issues and explain issues/concerns.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience in the building trades;
  • Two (2) years of experience working on building mechanical systems;
  • Experience in general building construction and repair.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working for a government, public institution, or higher education institution;
  • Completion of trade school program in electrical, HVAC, Direct Digital Control (DDC) Systems, and/or plumbing;
  • Five (5) years of applicable experience in electrical work, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, and general maintenance/repair.
  • Salary is based on Range 47G, Step G, $4,602 per month with periodic increments to $5,341 per month. Salary placement is typically made at the starting salary for the range. Placement higher in the range may be considered for qualifications and experience. Salary and benefits are subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements.
  • This position is eligible for overtime pay in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • This is a union-represented position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
