The City of Torrance is recruiting for a WIRELESS TECHNICIAN to be part of the Communications and Information Technology Team!

The Department

The Communication and Information Technology (CIT) Department is a dynamic technical computer organization that readily adapts to the needs of the City of Torrance. CIT administers and maintains the City's communications and computing network environment, software applications, network/hardware infrastructure, desktop computers, telephones (desktop and cellular), and mobile radio communications for Police, Fire and the entire City's wireless communication infrastructure. CIT is responsible for approximately 200+ different business applications and office automation software programs and is also responsible for ensuring the integrity and security of all data passing through or stored on our network.

The Position

The City of Torrance is seeking a self-motivated, detailed oriented professional to perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of mobile and stationary radios, public safety lights and sirens, voice intercoms and recording systems, and other electronic communications equipment. This position works closely with vendors, contractors and other departments to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner and maintains records and files of repair work and inventory. In addition, Wireless Technicians have the opportunity to participate in the design and fabrication of special electronic apparatuses.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Graduation from high school or equivalent is required and four years of experience installing, maintaining and repairing radio and electronic communications equipment is required. Completion of trade or technical school is desirable.

License and/or Certificates

An appropriate valid California driver's license; possession of a Federal Communications Commission license is desirable. Possession of a NABER or similar certification is also desirable.

Successful candidates will possess the following

  • Quickly and accurately install, maintain, and repair radio and electronic communication equipment;
  • Program and reprogram Motorola radio devices and systems according to specific operational requirements and user needs;
  • Diagnose and repair faults in radio communication systems, including hardware and software components, to minimize downtime;
  • Locate and identify interruptions and interferences;
  • Interpret and prepare specifications for blueprints and drawings;
  • Operate a computer to install and optimize communication systems and to manage service requests;
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and fellow employees;
  • Effectively coordinate with other staff to prioritize equipment repair and installation;
  • Work in a team environment while working independently to complete equipment repairs and installations;
  • Be agile and creative to solve technically difficult repairs or installs;
  • Exhibit a working knowledge in voice intercoms systems;
  • Coordinate with manufacturers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies to resolve technical issues and ensure compliance with industry standards;

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands and/or working conditions.

Requires the ability to perform heavier physical tasks such as walking, standing, climbing, lifting and carrying objects of moderate weight (12-50 pounds); and/or the operation of vehicles, office, shop or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations.

Climbs stepped antenna structures up to 100 feet high using safety harness. Rides high-lift apparatus, uses ladders and works on multi-story buildings. Works in enclosed areas and underground.

Only those candidates who best meet the City and Department's needs will be invited to participate in the examination process, which will consist of the following components:

Written Test: Weighted 60% (Tentatively scheduled on Thursday, March 28, 2024)

Panel Interview: Weighted 40% (Tentatively scheduled on Thursday, March 28, 2024)

The tentative test date(s) will be based on a sufficient number of qualified applications received by the first review date. If a sufficient number of applications are not received by the first review date, there is the possibility that the test date may change to a later date.
