Overview:

The National Urban League seeks a dedicated Director, Financial and Housing Policy, to join our Washington Bureau, reporting directly to the Executive Director of the Washington Bureau. The Director will design, develop, and implement policy programs within their areas of responsibility, focusing on financial services, economic development, and housing policy. The Director will advocate on Capitol Hill, in the Executive Branch, and within the policy community, providing guidance and support services to both the economic and housing programming staff and the affiliate movement. As a key member of the Washington Bureau team, the Director will help develop and implement the National Urban Leagues federal agenda and provide strategic advice.



Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the National Urban Leagues federal policy agenda.
  • Engage key legislators, policymakers, and advocacy organizations to advance the National Urban Leagues federal policy agenda by skillfully navigating the legislative and regulatory process to achieve results.
  • Collaborate with the Washington Bureau team to develop advocacy strategies that promote NULs financial services, economic development, and housing policies.
  • Conduct research and policy analysis in economic and housing areas, producing reports, presentations, and advocacy materials.
  • Monitor federal legislative and regulatory activities, recommending actions to align with and advance the National Urban Leagues priorities.
  • Assist in crafting legislative language, comments on administrative rules, and policy statements.
  • Facilitate communication and strategy alignment among Urban League affiliates, enhancing their capacity to respond to federal policy changes.
  • Represent the Urban League in national coalitions, partnerships, and meetings related to education and workforce development.
  • Work collaboratively with economic and housing programming staff.


Qualifications:

Education:

  • Masters degree in public policy, social work, political science, or related field required; Doctorate or JD preferred, but not required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of relevant legislative affairs experience in a small to mid-sized organization; Capitol Hill experience preferred.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong understanding of the role of the Urban Leagues affiliate movement in conjunction with the National Office
  • Strong familiarity with Capitol Hill and executive/legislative branches of government
  • Experience with not-for-profit organization strongly preferred.
  • Managerial experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Collaborative style, detailedoriented and should enjoy working on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to be flexible and to work under deadlines.
  • Must be a self-directed leader and a collaborative team member.
  • Demonstrated success in overseeing projects while managing a team.
  • Twenty-five percent of travel required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to fifteen pounds at times.
