MAJOR FUNCTIONS

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

Under the guidance and leadership of the Director of Public Works, the Trades Worker II is semi-skilled level work in masonry, concrete, asphalt and pipe laying trade. Perform a variety of manual labor tasks requiring job-acquired skills in new construction, maintenance, repair, construction of streets, storm water pipes, culverts, inlet boxes, overflow structures, sidewalks curb and gutter installation.

This position is designated as emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during, and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, winter storm, severe thunder storm, flash flooding, etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Performs basic masonry, plastering, and concrete work in the construction, demolition, alteration, repair and maintenance of concrete such as bridges, spans, columns, driveways, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, storm-water structures such as boxes, culverts, inlets, slabs, floors, concrete forms and masonry structures such as head walls, brick and block walls, building construction repair and demolition, repair and various other types of construction.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties such as laying concrete block and brick, installing concrete and plastic pipe for storm water systems.
  • Performs maintenance and repair of streetscapes, sidewalks, headwalls, drop inlets and drainage pipes.
  • Operates surveying equipment to determine grades and elevations, record, read, and interpret elevation readings.
  • Performs maintenance, repair and construction of asphalt streets and structures.
  • Assists supervisor and fellow team members in the planning and lay-out of projects.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and is capable of performing work in the following areas: Sodding, seeding, trimming, mowing, edging, pruning, watering and fertilizing of grass, flowers, shrubs and trees. Planting in median strips, traffic islands, beds, and around public buildings. Excavation of trenches, ditches and foundations. Spraying of grass, flowers, shrubs and trees with insecticides, fungicides and weed killers. Maintenance, repair and construction of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, swales, sewer, water lines, storm drains and catch basins. Operation of automobiles or light and medium trucks.
  • Must be able to work in all types of adverse weather conditions and environments and be available for duties outside regular working hours when called upon to assist On-call staff or when required by Supervisor (overtime).
  • Communicates in an efficient, prompt, and courteous manner with all internal and external customers including regulatory bodies and public entities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Basic knowledge of materials, methods, procedures and equipment used in the masonry and concrete trade.
  • Ability to work from blueprints, rough sketches maps.
  • Basic knowledge of buildings/ construction standards, DOT specifications and other regulations pertaining to this trade.
  • Basic working knowledge of hand and power tools, methods, and materials in general maintenance work and concrete finishing and block laying.
  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools of one or more of the masonry and pavement trades.
  • Ability to understand, follow and communicate in writing.
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards in the work involved and take precautionary methods to protect self and others.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor (digging, lifting etc..) for extended periods, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative, positive, and effective working relationships with other departments, team members, professional groups, and the general public.
  • Possess physical strength and agility sufficient to work out of doors under variable weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required.
  • Three years' experience in manual labor maintenance and construction work in related fields of concrete, masonry, asphalt, and pipe laying work desired.

A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
