JOB SUMMARY: Provides overall maintenance of the Head Start Building ensuring a clean safe environment. Responsible for fire extinguisher maintenance and fire management training for site staff.

This position is 30 hours per week, 38 weeks per year.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures that relevant Head Start Performance Standards, Child Development Division's Policies and Procedures, Head Start's Work Plan, RurAL CAP's Policies and Procedures, Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) guidelines and State health, safety and sanitation guidelines are followed.
  • Maintains the safety and sanitation of classrooms, toilet areas, and office spaces.
  • Performs heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, removing garbage, and removing snow/ice from exits and walkways. If no running water, brings in the water containers, as necessary, and cleans and sanitizes the containers weekly.
  • Keeps the building, equipment and toys in good repair at all times. Assists Site Supervisor in ordering and maintaining adequate cleaning supplies and equipment and if appropriate, heating fuel.
  • Ensures safety and sanitation guidelines are followed. Mixes water detergents or chemical cleaners in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
  • Ensures that fire extinguishers are in working order and conducts a monthly fire drill. Arranges for training or instructs teaching staff and volunteers on use of the extinguishers and management of fire in the center or office.
  • Coordinates with Site Supervisor and Central Office Purchasing Department for facility improvements, renovations and construction projects.
  • Participates in weekly staff meetings, regular supervisory meetings and all required training.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS AND REQUIRED EDUCATION:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience in carpentry and building maintenance.
  • Must pass state and federal background checks, including fingerprints.
  • Must pursue an ongoing professional development plan including formal training certification or college degree as recommended by the program.
  • Must attend 15 hours of professional development training annually.
  • Must provide a TB screening and basic physical exam within thirty (30) days of hire with follow-up every three (3) years at employee's expense.
  • Must complete and maintain CPR and First Aid Training certification at employer's expense.
  • Responsible work ethic with reliable attendance.
  • Proven ability and willingness to be self-directed in problem solving and decision-making and perform basic assignment with little or no direct supervision while also working effectively as a team member.
  • Basic skill level in word processing and email.
  • Must keep all matters concerning participants in strictest confidence as required by HIPAA privacy and the 42 CFR, Part II confidentiality regulations.
  • Must be able to provide own transportation to meet work schedule requirements.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience working with young children.
  • Head Start experience.
  • Demonstrated intermediate level of computer skills necessary in order to use and create documents and reports, spreadsheets, workshop materials and slide presentations, and to enter data into intricate database programs and proficient use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with the social, cultural, political, economic, and service delivery systems of rural Alaska. Competence in multi-cultural environments.
  • Two to three years of experience working in a related field.
