Description

The Corrections Deputy maintains the safety and security of inmates and staff at the Williams County Correctional Center.
Examples of Duties

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position. The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list and may change with or without notice.   • Maintains the safety and security of the staff, inmates and correction facility; monitors behavior of inmates and promotes acceptable attitude and conduct
  • Maintains custody and control of inmates according to policies, procedures and regulations
  • Supervises inmate activities and maintains discipline; may physically restrain uncooperative or disruptive inmates and take steps to avert fights, assaults, riots, and escapes
  • Performs inspections of all jail areas ensuring they are safe, secure, sanitary and free of contraband; conducts random cell searches for contraband
  • Monitors inmates for rule violations and behavioral changes; maintains appropriate use-of-force continuum as needed for self-defense, defense of another, and to prevent escape
  • Operates building controls; properly times door openings and closings; monitors deputy locations
  • Communicates via intercom in a professional manner; maintains communication with Corporal and in-line with chain of command
  • Accounts for inmates under direct vision and supervision at all times; monitors corrections facility circuit video displays; supervises inmates in courtroom
  • Provides care for inmates; administers and dispenses medications; schedules medical, personal and other appointments; transports and arranges transport for appointments and visits outside of the facility
  • Conducts booking and release of inmates; performs clothed and unclothed searches, examines and tests inmates according to policies; collects and inventories property; completes electronic booking forms, index cards and other records
  • Interviews and classifies new inmates; assesses criminal history and capabilities and assigns cells; re-classifies and re-arranges housing as required by inmate behavior
  • Maintains inmate property, financial and corrections records
  • Updates and maintains a variety of files, records, event logs, charts and other documents; distributes appropriate records and prepares reports as required
  • Answers phones and relays messages
  • Assists other Sheriff's Office staff, County departments, and Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies as needed
  • Maintains the integrity, professionalism and ethical standards of the Sheriff's Office by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed
  • Maintains confidentiality of non-public records and makes available all data and information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code

Typical Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent AND one (1) year of satisfactory work experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Must possess a valid North Dakota Driver's License or equivalent
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
  • Must complete the Corrections Officer basic course within one (1) year of hire
  • Must be able to work in uniform during weekdays, weekends, and holidays on any assigned shift

Supplemental Information

Work is performed in a correctional facility environment that involves constant awareness and concentration of surrounding activities. Work occasionally involves personal danger and potential exposure to hazardous situations; the physical ability to subdue hostile individuals is required.

Compensation: Pay rate starts at $28.18/hour and is based on qualifications and experience.

Employees who are at least 18 years of age and are working in a qualified position an average of 20 hours per week for five or more months of the year are required to participate in the North Dakota Public Employees Retirement System (ND PERS) Retirement Plan. Membership will become effective immediately upon employment.
