Under limited supervision, the Principal Business Analyst provides leadership and coordination of project teams consisting of management, end-users, IT staff and vendors. Provides a blend of both business analyst and systems analyst skills to implement and manage business systems matching business requirements with systems capabilities.
Responsibilities

Ensure business systems are effectively designed, developed, tested, and implemented to support increased efficiency and effectiveness of the business and meet the business requirements (30%)

Responsible for project organization and execution and will lead design, vendor evaluation, implementation and management of multiple projects. Collaborates with systems analysts in the development and implementation of business systems or problem solving.

  • Understand the Business - Understands the business requirements through frequent targeted interactions with the business system end-users and leadership.
  • Identify Opportunities for Improvement - Uses current knowledge of the business requirements and system capabilities to identify opportunities for increasing efficiency and effectiveness. Formulates improvement plans and presents them to leadership.
  • Identify and Implement new business systems or enhancements to existing business systems
    • Devise ways to add new functionality or enhancements to existing business systems.
    • Design and develop new systems by choosing and configuring hardware and software.
    • Oversee the installation and configuration of new business systems.
    • Conduct testing to ensure that the business system works as expected.
    • Train the business system subject matter experts (SME) and end-users.
    • Document business systems for efficient and effective support.
  • Communicate Issues and Changes - Responsible for proactively communicating upcoming planned business system changes to end-users and management. Timely communication of unplanned business system issues and changes to minimize negative impact to the business.

Project Management: Prioritize, Plan, and Coordinate the work of IT, Vendors and Business Resources to complete initiatives (30%)

Manage and monitor progress for business system projects to ensure that deadlines, standards, and cost targets are met.
  • Evaluates the work requested by the business, effectively prioritizes the work, establishes plans, makes a commitment for delivery, and effectively ensures delivery against those plans.
  • Coordinates the work assignments of self, other IT staff and business resources to ensure effective execution.
  • Ensures effective and thorough communication for any business system initiatives.
  • Ensures effective performance of business resources and vendors who work on a project.
  • Provides work direction to and may supervise the work of System Analysts and Programmers.
  • Ensures appropriate escalation and awareness to Surmodics and vendor management of any issues or risks.

Production Support (30%)

Responsible for the ongoing maintenance, support and operations of the Surmodics business systems.
  • Ensuring functionality and usability of the business systems are aligned with Surmodics' priorities and enable end-users to do their work efficiently and effectively.
  • Responsible for diagnosing and resolving business system issues to ensure optimal performance and usability for the end-users. Provide root cause analysis with recommendations for improvements.
  • Accountable for performing daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly operations tasks required for the ongoing functionality of the business systems.
  • Some programming and debugging duties will be required to develop queries/reports of varying complexity and to troubleshoot and fix programmatic issues.

Ensures Positive End-User Experience with business systems (10%)
  • Ensures technology issues impacting end-users are identified, prioritized, and addressed.
  • Ensure effective communication and training (in person or verbal whenever possible) takes place to ensure effective use of business systems.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Business Administration or related field.
  • Ten years' experience with increasing responsibility in systems analysis and/or business analysis with project management or leadership responsibilities.
  • Must have ability to exercise independent judgment in planning, organizing, and performing business analyst tasks. Independent judgment required in setting priorities of tasks amongst multiple assigned projects.
  • Must have ability to communicate, motivate, and organize projects among a broad spectrum of personnel throughout the business, frequently under deadline pressure.
  • Knowledge of business systems, including familiarity with financial/manufacturing/business applications, HR applications, compliance applications, or others, sufficient to use and support interactive applications and to plan and perform medium- to large-scale projects.
