Summary Description

Camp Chewonki is looking for a Registered Nurse to join our team this summer! Chewonki is a wilderness based camp located on a 400 acre coastal campus in Midcoast Maine! Our campus has a beautiful waterfront, hiking trails, working farm, and an aviary. We serve approximately 400 boys, girls and gender non-binary children each summer as they focus on community building, outdoor living skills, natural history, farm and food systems, and watercraft.

We are looking for someone that enjoys working with children to join our health team of registered nurses, health center aides (EMTS, WFRs or nursing students), a Mental Health Coordinator and mental health aides. Our nurses oversee the health needs of participants on campus as well as those on remote backcountry trips.

  • Location: Wiscasset, Maine (On Campus, in-person)
  • Schedule/ 2024 Dates: June 19, 2024 - August 11, 2024
  • Reports to: Supervising Registered Nurse

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Report to the Supervising Nurse and act under accordance with the Maine State Board of Nursing regulations.
  • Review health forms for incoming participants and set up health accommodations as needed.
  • Complete health checks on each participant during opening day.
  • Manage medications and refills during the duration of camp.
  • Treat injuries and illness of participants, including driving to doctor's appointments or urgent care.
  • Triage health needs of participants on remote backcountry trips via satellite phone.
  • Oversee stocking and organization of supplies and med kits.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license with the Maine State Board of Nursing.
  • Current Basic Life Saving (BLS) certification.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Valid Driver's License approved by Chewonki's insurance carrier.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Physical and emotional assessment skills.
  • Prior nursing experience preferably in camping, primary care, school setting, emergency care and/or pediatrics.
  • Friendly, empathetic attitude, with excellent communication skills.
  • Detail oriented. Able to keep accurate and detailed records of supplies and equipment.
  • Attend required onboarding and training sessions (in-person/on campus).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lb at a time.
  • Camp activity areas are spread over many acres. Must be able to walk outdoors as needed throughout the camp day and night.

  • Salary for the full Camp Chewonki season is $7,000
