**Organization Overview**

Excel Academy was founded in 2003 with the mission to provide a high-quality education to students in East Boston and Chelsea Massachusetts, communities that are predominantly low-income and Latinx and historically have faced significant social and educational barriers. Our success in Massachusetts is proof that the opportunity gap can be closed. Over the years, we have grown from one middle school to a network of four schools with 1,400 students in grades 5 to 12. In the fall of 2022 we will welcome a founding class of 5th graders to help us launch Excel Academy Rhode Island. By 2032, Excel Rhode Island will run 4 schools serving over 2,100 students from Providence, Central Falls, and North Providence.

**About the Role**

This role is a hybrid role and will include responsibilities at the high school as a building substitute and responsibilities at the daycare as a substitute assistant teacher.

*High School Building Substitute (90-95%)*

High School Building Substitutes gain a great deal of exposure to fundamental areas of teaching, including curriculum development and classroom management. They are eager to learn and actively seek out feedback in order to build their instructional skills. Like all Excel teachers, they are responsible for delivering effective, high-quality, rigorous college-preparatory instruction designed to foster the success of their students. This position will perform a variety of essential responsibilities, including (but not limited to):

* Provide regular coverage during instructional and non-instructional time;

* Supervise an after-school program (for example, Writers Workshop or Homework Club);

* Provide operational support as needed;

* Serve as a productive member of the Excel Academy community; and

* Do whatever it takes to ensure the mission of the school is upheld.

*Daycare Substitute Assistant Teacher (5-10%)*

Excel Academy has launched an on-site daycare for up to 10 newborns, infants, and toddlers of Excel staff and faculty. As a key lever in our efforts to build and sustain a family-friendly work environment, the Daycare will align with Excels operating hours and calendar and provide a quality work-based childcare option for the young children of Excel staff. In alignment with our commitment to diversity and inclusion, the Daycare will utilize a Spanish immersion model.

The Daycare is staffed by a small team of Teachers and Assistant Teachers working a range of full-time and part-time hours to provide adequate coverage throughout the hours of operation (6:45 - 5:00). The Substitute Assistant Teacher will play an important role in ensuring the continuation of the program during scheduled and unexpected staff absences. Ideally, the Substitute Teacher will be available to provide support through both scheduled and on-call needs and partial and full day coverage.

Assist as a Childcare Provider:

* Support in maintaining a warm, safe, and positive environment that encourages learning and socialization;

* Engage children in active conflict management and address behavior issues in a positive manner;

* Assist in all aspects of the day, including daily schedule, activities, snacks & meals (including feeding infants/babies), hand washing, diapering/toileting needs; and

* Support in the organization, cleanliness, and maintenance needs of the childcare space.

**Qualifications**

* Must be at least 18 years old

* Have a demonstrable passion for working with infants/toddlers

* Some experience working in an urban public or charter school and/or with urban students preferred, but not required

* Prior childcare experience

* Proficiency in Spanish strongly preferred

* The ability to work effectively in a team environment and the willingness and desire to support others in doing their best work

* An entrepreneurial spirit that reflects an openness to change, a willingness to problem-solve, and an interest in developing new ideas & programs

* Expected work hours: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM (may be flexible)

*Preference will be given to applicants who also:*

* Have experience in a public or charter school setting

* Speak Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic fluently

* Can speak to the importance of rigorous classroom instruction and culture

* Can speak to the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion
