CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION

Position is primarily responsible for the transportation of detainees to either Kane or Cook County pre-trial detention hearing, performing all duties associated or relating to pretrial detention hearings and any other authorized duties as directed by the Chief of Police and in compliance with Elgin Municipal Code, Chapter 2.57, Auxiliary Police Officer, Section 2.57.050.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

  • Auxiliary Police Officers shall be conservators of the peace and after receiving a certificate attesting the successful completion of a training course administered by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, shall have the power to (1) arrest or cause to be arrested, with or without process, all persons who break the peace or are violating any municipal ordinance or any criminal law of the state and (2) to commit arrested persons for examination.
  • To direct traffic and assist in traffic control.
  • To assist in parade control and to keep peace in all large gatherings in and about the community.
  • To aid in the control of natural or manmade disasters and in case of civil disorder, and to assist in cases of riot, disaster, and emergency control as directed by the Chief of Police.
  • Assignment to details primarily at the Hemmens Auditorium, Gail Borden Library, police information desk and crowd control and traffic direction at parades and festivals.
  • To perform all duties associated with or relating to pretrial detention hearings as directed by the Chief of Police.
  • Facilitate the fingerprinting of individuals who are cited and released by the police department pursuant to the Pretrial Fairness Act.
  • Transport detainees to a pretrial detention hearing located at the Kane or Cook County Judicial Centers and adhere to requests made by court personnel to facilitate the pretrial detention hearing.
  • Must qualify annually and maintain adequate proficiency with an assigned firearm.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Possess a valid FOID card.
  • Graduated from a full-time basic police training academy and eligible for a waiver of training from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, if applicable.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of law enforcement experience.
  • General knowledge of local, state, and federal laws.
  • Able to communicate with the public in a courteous and impartial manner.
  • Ability to follow all verbal and written instructions.
  • Capability to prepare and maintain simple records.
  • Can work independently with minimal supervision.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Hours: Flexible work days during the week from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

  • Must be available to work 2-3 weekend days per month.
