JOB PURPOSE:

This is advanced skilled mechanical work maintaining and repairing automotive, diesel, and other equipment in the City municipal fleet. Job functions performed include skilled work on the City's forestry, fire, parks, public works, police, and pool vehicles, and various equipment which includes aerators, backhoes, ballfield groomers, blowers, chippers, forklifts, mowers, skid steers, tractors, trimmers, small engines, and more. This position focuses on extensive diesel and will have responsibilities around the ordering and maintaining parts or work orders. They will trouble shoot and rebuild equipment as necessary. Mechanics report to the Fleet Manager, who relays the nature of the trouble, specifying the repairs needed. The Fleet Manager is available to give assistance on difficult problems and may inspect work in progress and upon completion.

This position is designated as emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during and after any adverse storm events (tornado, winter storm, flooding, severe thunderstorm, ice storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair work on light, medium, and heavy trucks, automobiles, tractors, refuse trucks, fire trucks, mowers, and other automotive, diesel, and mechanical
  • Schedules, delegates, and monitors the work of assigned Mechanics and Technicians in the absence of the Fleet Manager.
  • Inspects City municipal fleet and equipment for safety defects and road
  • Removes vehicles from service due to
  • Inspects mechanical functions including the suspension, steering, brakes, lights, tires, hoses, and exhaust systems.
  • Diagnoses mechanical problems, electrical components, and cooling components and determines the extent of necessary repairs.
  • Repairs, adjusts, and rebuilds engines (both gasoline and diesel), transmissions, differentials and clutches, air conditioning units and hydraulic systems.
  • Raises vehicle using hydraulic jack or hoists to remove or replace units such as an engine, transmission, or differential.
  • Tunes up engines; replaces, fits, and adjusts components and replaces parts including carburetors, fuel injection, fuel pumps, pistons, fuel lines, gasoline tanks and bearings.
  • Uses specialized equipment to diagnose electrical systems and computerized engine controls. Repairs and replaces such components as alternators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches. Wires, diagnoses, and reconditions electrical systems and computerized engine controls.
  • Relines brakes, replaces master cylinders and boosters, and turns drums and

  • Uses equipment such as boom truck and overhead crane to perform activities such as rigging, removal of old material and installation of new parts.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Training:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a High School Diploma or any combination of experience, education, and training that would provide the level of knowledge and ability required.
  • Ten plus years' experience preferred (Three year minimum) as an automotive or diesel mechanic, completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade or equivalent combination of training & experience in a related field.
  • Full journeyman mechanic
    • Experience in customer service and scheduling
    • Experience in wire feed, MIG, arc and gas welding
    • Hydraulic system training
    • Experience in design, fabrication and modern welding techniques preferred.


License or Certificate:
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Valid Missouri Class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement required within sixty (60) days of hire.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class A Commercial Driver's License within one (1) year of employment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a CPR/AED Certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain an OSHA -10 certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Additional training beyond high school in auto/diesel mechanics or four years of experience in fleet maintenance or in a related field required.
  • Must have or acquire within one year of hire and maintain an ASE Heavy Truck
  • Air conditioning refrigerant handling certification preferred.
  • Forklift Certification required preferred.
  • Must have four ASE certifications in the Medium/Heavy Truck series or must successfully complete any four ASE certification tests in the Medium/Heavy Truck series within one year of hire.
  • Valid Missouri Class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement required within sixty (60) days of hire. Class A preferred.
  • This position is subject to federal drug testing requirements including screening through the FMCSA Clearinghouse. A pre-employment drug screen is required.
