About the Position:
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for an open-rank faculty position in the Department of Health Behavior, School of Public Health, for those with expertise in LGBTQ health research. Experience and an interest in community-led research approaches will be especially welcome, as this is an area of significant growth in the department under Dr. Sarah MacCarthy's leadership as the Magic City LGBTQ Health Studies Endowed Chair.
This is a full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty position at the assistant, associate, or full professor level.
About the Candidate:
The candidate must hold a doctorate in Psychology, Neuroscience, Social Work, Nursing, Public Health, or a related field, as well as a track record of scholarly work on LGBTQ research.
The successful candidate will be expected to create an independent, externally funded research program focused on LGBTQ health. While the position will be grounded in a significant research agenda, the successful candidate will also be expected to foster interdisciplinary collaborations, teach courses, mentor and advise students, and participate in service activities throughout the school, university, and community. Importantly, they will assist in establishing, developing, and maintaining long-term and trusting relationships with diverse community organizations focused on LGBTQ health in Birmingham, across the state, and throughout the region.

About the School of Public Health:
The UAB School of Public Health is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health, and it has more than $38 million in active grant research. The mission of the school is to promote positive and long-term change in the public's health by pursuing excellence in scholarship, teaching, and community service. Since its inception in 1978, the school has grown to include more than 80 faculty and 1,243 students, and it has been ranked among the top NIH-funded schools of public health for the past ten years. Industry, the Alabama Department of Public Health, and the Alabama Medicaid Agency are all major supporters of its research. The five departments of the school provide training in more than 20 major specialty areas and participate in numerous interdisciplinary training programs with UAB's Graduate School and various health professional schools.
About the Department of Health Behavior:
The Department of Health Behavior conducts research and offers undergraduate, master's, and doctoral level education and training in a wide variety of topic areas and is highly collaborative across the university. The department offers a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in health behavior and contributes to a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Public Health. Our Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Behavior program emphasizes training in the social and behavioral sciences, as well as mastery of research methodology and its application to a variety of health issues including sexual health, obesity and lifestyle interventions, prevention and control of addictive behaviors, and mental health through a variety of methods such as community-based health promotion, telehealth, and implementation science.
Required Qualifications
Doctorate in Psychology, Neuroscience, Social Work, Nursing, Public Health, or a related field, as well as a track record of scholarly work on LGBTQ research.
