Job Details

Provides manual labor assistance to Street Department crews engaged in the construction, repair, and maintenance of City streets and other related City properties by performing the following duties.Include the following. Other related duties may be assigned. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

* Uses jack hammer in the construction and repair of streets, sidewalks and other related properties.

* Uses pick and shovel to loosen and remove dirt from roadbeds and right-of-ways.

* Loads and unloads cement and masonry bags.

* Uses shovel and rake to load and unload various raw materials such as rock, sand, gravel, dirt, sod, etc. used in the construction, repair and maintenance of City streets.

* Picks up and loads logs and other debris onto truck.

* Shovels hot asphalt from truck to, and on, newly poured streets and roads.

* Drives small trucks such as crew-cab pickup and one or two ton trucks to bring crewmembers and materials to job sites.

* Operates weed eaters, chainsaws, and riding mowers in maintenance of right-of-ways and other City properties.

* Assists in storm basin cleaning and City drainage system maintenance.

* Moves office furniture, filing cabinets, and other City appliances as necessary.

* Cleans street department floors and offices as necessary.

* Provides other manual labor assistance as needed.


No formal education required. Must have at least 6 months related work experience in outdoor manual labor and a satisfactory work history and background (i.e., Must not have been discharged from previous employment for poor work habits, excessive tardiness, absenteeism, insubordination or violence or threats of violence at work.)

A valid class D driver's license and a good driving record is required.

The complexity, guidelines, supervisory controls, and supervision responsibilities described below are representative of this position.


Tasks are clear-cut. Employee carries out simple one or two step instructions. Specific, detailed guidelines are provided. There is no choice in deciding what needs to be done. The work is closely controlled. The supervisor makes specific assignments. Authorization is needed for any deviation from original instructions. The supervisor reviews most work. The employee does not supervise any employees.
