Youth Shelter Homeless Services Specialist

Job Summary:Provides coverage at the Runaway and Homeless Youth Shelter. Carries out duties in accordance with Agency and Program Policies and procedures and Federal/State policies/licensing regulations

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responds to clients in person and on the Crisis Hotline, provides appropriate intervention, referrals and assistance
  • Provides crisis intervention in a calm and effective manner; provides one-on-one supportive counseling to clients
  • Assists consumers in contacting and connecting with resources, both internally and external to OCO
  • Assists consumers with activities to meet needs and goals such as scheduling/attending various appointments, scheduling/providing transportation, planning/participating in recreational/social activities and health/medication related needs
  • Gathers necessary information for shelter entry assessment; coordinates services with prospective entry; arranges a safe pick-up place and arranges transportation
  • Ensures safety of the shelter and of the residents at all times
  • Acts as a positive role model; assist youth in self-help skills; provides case management services
  • Provides assistance with meal preparation, housekeeping, shelter maintenance and collecting, organizing and documenting donations Facilitates house meetings as assigned
  • Provides transportation as needed
  • Enters data in a timely and accurate manner into the Databases according to requirements; assists with tracking and compiling statistics related to program activities and outcomes
  • Assists with outreach and awareness activities, as needed
  • Communicates with Program Manager regarding client activities, concerns and interactions
  • Provides satisfactory exchange of information to oncoming shifts when staffing the Youth Shelter
  • Facilitates household activities at the shelter, ensuring a friendly, home-like environment
  • Assists with providing support to the Homeless Program as assigned based on need


Minimum Qualifications

  • Must exhibit good judgement and maintain strict confidentiality of agency, program and consumer information
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge of regulations, services, rights and responsibilities for the population services
  • Must obtain and maintain all required certifications and trainings within required timeframes and attend internal external meetings and training sessions as assigned/required
  • Must have a valid NYS Driver's license with driving record within policy and access to a properly insured, reliable vehicle for regular travel and transporting consumers
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED and 12 months related experience in the area of human services or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training


Full-Time 37 Hours per week with flexibility

Grade 8

Monday: 10pm - 7am

Tuesday: 10pm - 7am

Wednesday: 10pm - 7am, 3:30pm - 4:30pm for weekly staff meeting

Thursday: 10pm - 7am
