Legal Navigator/Paralegal, Special Initiative for New Arrivals

Job Type: Full-time

Program: Special Initiative for New Arrivals

Center for Family Life in Sunset Park (CFLSP), a nationally recognized social service program in Sunset Park Brooklyn, is seeking a full-time Legal Navigator to work in our Special Initiative for New Arrivals which provides benefits enrollment, employment services, and legal assistance to new immigrants. This is an excellent position for anyone who would like to prepare for an application to law school or to advance their career in paralegal work.

I. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE but are not limited to

  • Screen and triage newly arrived immigrants for eligibility?for legal services including immigration, wage and hour, tenants' rights, and others
  • Under the supervision of an attorney, provide pro se assistance to new immigrants eligible for relief including Asylum, Temporary Protected Status, and Work Authorization
  • Conduct comprehensive, trauma-informed immigration intake screenings
  • Assist clients in obtaining the documents necessary for applications
  • Provide pro se application assistance
  • Work closely with the Special Initiative team to provide integrated services to shared clients
  • Assist clients with resources and referrals for other legal needs
  • Complete comprehensive immigration legal training and attend ongoing professional development training
  • Receive cross-training in benefits screening and enrollment, and assist the Benefits team when needed
  • Complete all required documentation and maintain case files
  • Track outcomes and complete required data entry
  • Attend staff meetings and supervision
  • Collaborate with all CFLSP programs to provide wraparound services
  • Other duties as assigned

II. QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional, and/or community experience
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English required
  • Proficient in data entry and MS Office tools
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities
  • Availability for occasional weekend work to attend community events
  • Initiative, and drive to learn and excel at the responsibilities described above

III. RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS
  • Build and maintain close, daily interactions with co-workers and supervisors
  • Effectively communicate with clients, agency staff, and community partners
  • Excellent engagement skills, meeting clients where they are at and forging mutual respect
  • Have a strong sensitivity to cultural differences present among staff and clients within our organization
  • Possess a strong belief in people's ability to grow and change

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Considerable time is spent at a desk using a computer and meeting one-on-one with clients
  • Attendance at various internal and external meetings
  • Occasional travel to CFL and community-based sites
  • Occasional availability during evenings and weekends to attend events

This is a Full-time non-exempt position at 35 hours per week. Compensation: $42,500-$45,000 per year.
