Summary: Performs a variety of skilled work in the operation of heavy equipment and specialized machinery utilized in maintenance and repair.

Supervision Received:Director of Public Works, Operations Manager, Streets Superintendent, Streets Foreman

Supervision Exercised: None

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Essential Job Functions

  • Operates the following pieces of equipment: dump trucks, front-end loaders, rollers, motor graders, sand spreaders, street sweepers, mowers. concrete saws, bucket truck w/ hydraulics, chain saw, tree chipper, tree stumper, air compressor, jackhammer, air driven compaction tools.
  • Operates a variety of other special and standard equipment as assigned.
  • Assist with sanding and snow removal.
  • Levels and finishes asphalt and concrete.
  • Performs manual labor incidental to the operation to which assigned and occasionally exercises supervision over other operators and laborers.
  • Must be on call occasionally on weekends or after hours.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion.

Peripheral Job Duties

  • Open and close graves at cemetery.
  • Operate forklift and skid steer loaders.
  • Assist and substitute for all Public Works departments.

Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and use of heavy motor equipment in general construction and maintenance activities. Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations related to equipment operation. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the operation of heavy motor driven equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions. Skill in the operation of heavy motor driven equipment over rough, slippery, or unstable surfaces.

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience: Experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy motor driven equipment. Two years as Light Equipment Operator or Utility Operator OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Equipment Used in Job Performance: Dump trucks, front-end loaders, rollers, sewer jetters, sand spreaders, motor patrols, street sweepers, concrete saws, bucket truck w/ hydraulics, chain saw, tree chipper, tree stumper, air compressor, jackhammer, air driven compaction tools.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. The employee regularly works in wet, humid conditions and near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places, is exposed to risk of electrical shock and is subject to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is loud to very loud.

Necessary Special Requirement: Valid North Dakota commercial driver license to be obtained within three months of hiring; insurable under the City's motor vehicle insurance policy.

Position is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and is subject to controlled substance requirements at all times when on duty.
