Summary

Starting pay range: $19.50- $23.40 per hour

Under supervision, performs variety of customer service and preventative maintenance duties in the maintenance of the City public infrastructure and property.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Repairing, installing, replacing and painting or fire hydrants, meter vaults, water pumps, water distribution lines and water valves.
  • Use airless sprayers and striping machines on streets and/or right-of-ways.
  • Assist in installing, maintaining and repairing storm drainage system, water distribution lines and sewer lines.
  • Aid with installing, repairing and/or replacing right-of-way signage.
  • Update logs and maps of location of utility lines and of cuts in asphalt paving.
  • Perform exterior maintenance duties for the cemetery and open space areas. Duties include mowing, aerating, trimming, raking leaves and clearing debris, pruning shrubs, bushes and plants and planting shrubs, bushes and plants.
  • Rotate system valves, as needed.
  • Assist with performing maintenance on water meters.
  • Provide support in the excavating of gravesites and burial process.
  • Assist with the installation of tombstones.
  • Perform inspections on equipment and vehicles for such things fluid levels, leaks, condition of hoses and belts, tire pressure, brake lights and related areas.
  • Secure, clean and care for all basic tools and equipment needed for job assignments.
  • Break out cement, digs out areas for new cement bases, mixes and pours cement for various projects.
  • Perform irrigation of cemetery area and assist with applying chemicals herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Assist with excavating, inspecting, cleaning and repairing water and sewer mains and service lines.
  • Inspect, clean and repair storm drain catch bins.
  • Assist with water meter reading.
  • Assist skilled trade workers in performing various projects.
  • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of construction and repair activities.
  • Install street barricades and cones as needed for special events.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from customers of water utilities and from the public.
  • Observe all common safety practices.
  • Operate heavy equipment, as directed.
  • Operate lightweight equipment powered by small engines for maintenance, clean up and minor construction projects.
  • Assist work on emergency projects, special tasks and daily work routines.
  • Aid in repairing streets with asphalt or cold patching materials.
  • Assist with turning on/off water connections to City residents and businesses.

Qualifications and Requirements

Basic knowledge and ability to learn:
  • Demonstrate basic horticulture practices.
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques and tools used in the construction maintenance of parks, landscaping areas and related facilities.
  • Understand watering requirements for lawns, trees and plants and various types of soil.
  • Exhibit use and maintenance of chemical spraying equipment.
  • Display operation of a wide variety of equipment and tools used in parks maintenance, repair and construction in a safe and effective manner.
  • Demonstrate understanding of pertinent federal and state laws, codes and regulations; City ordinances, rules, policies and procedures; Departmental rules, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively with other staff and public.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
Education, Training and Certification Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Colorado Class "R" Driver's License at time of application.
EXPERIENCE:
  • One-year experience in public works maintenance or related field, preferred.
  • One-year experience in building maintenance, construction and repair, preferred.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish, preferred.

  • No supervisory responsibility.
