About the role:

The Facilities Department at The Gladstone Institutes has a new opportunity for a motivated individual seeking a Senior Building Engineer position. The incumbent will apply their experience and knowledge of HVAC and building automation systems while assisting the Facilities Engineering team in overseeing and maintaining overall building operations. The role involves preventive and corrective maintenance of various building equipment and machinery, requiring skills in light carpentry, electrical, and plumbing.

Work is performed under general supervision, but the candidate is expected to use and introduce independent methods and procedures, exhibit troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, and supervise or lead various projects as needed. The incumbent must be available for occasional after-hours work and/or emergency on-call situations.

What you will do:

  • Operate, maintain, and repair all boilers, heater pumps, valves, appurtenances, and lines used in the distribution of steam and heated or processed water.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair refrigerant compressors, condensers, evaporators, traps, transfer pumps, expansion valves, stop valves, and float valves, along with all refrigerant lines and devices used to control temperature, and air conditioning systems.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair pumps handling brine or other secondary refrigerating liquids, including water, and all associated valves, appurtenances, and lines.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair air compressors, distribution lines, and all valves and devices for air control, including air dryer and filtering and separating systems.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair water filters, softeners, piping, expansion tanks, and pumps used in water distribution, including sinks, toilet bowls, supply lines, drains, water lines, control devices, and sprinkler systems.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair all types of electrical motors used to power pumps, compressors, and fans.
  • Perform various work orders in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Utilize a computerized building management system to process work orders, inventory equipment, and record work histories for building equipment.
  • Help maintain the PM schedule for pertinent building equipment, including Air Handling Units and exhaust fans.
  • Navigate and manipulate the Siemens Building Automation System to learn, monitor, and control building systems and operations.
  • Provide emergency response during regular shifts and after hours, and be on-call a minimum of one week each month.


What you will need:
  • High School Diploma or GED. An Associate's Degree or vocational/technical school degree in boiler operation, HVAC, basic mechanics, electrical theory, BOMA Designation, or equivalent is preferred.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with boilers, HVAC, electrical, building automation systems, lab utilities, and interacting with system end-users.
  • Two or more years of supervisor/lead experience is preferred.
  • Experience with boiler, HVAC, refrigeration, building automation, or similar systems is desired.


Knowledge of:
  • Building equipment, including air compressors, vacuum systems, refrigeration, HVAC equipment, boilers, and chillers, and the connectivity of building system operations.
  • Building Automation Systems.
  • Handling pressure situations.


Skills in:
  • Handling a wrench.
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting.
  • Utilizing Building Management Systems (particularly Siemens) and Computerized Maintenance Management programs.
  • Working independently and as part of a team.
  • Vendor interactions and handling multiple tasks simultaneously.

Hiring Range:

$111,305- $130,947
