JOB SUMMARY: Is responsible for direct child care, appraisal and follow-up of case load. Prepares health care plans for involved students and supervises the implementation of required health care procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Observes special education students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
  • Screens students for health defects, including height, weight, vision, hearing, scoliosis, and kindergarten screenings.
  • Administers medication and treatment prescribed by physicians and oversees procedures for office staff to administer medications in the absence of the school nurse.
  • Conducts parent conferences and maintains liaison between physicians, parents and staff.
  • Makes recommendations to primary care physician on health needs of individual students.
  • Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students requiring nursing intervention, including immunization records and exemptions for religious and medical reasons.
  • Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other agencies on student health matters.
  • Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
  • Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures and district policies.
  • Implements board policy on exclusion and re admission of students in connection withinfectious and contagious diseases.
  • Conducts training for students related to impairments, health and hygiene.
  • Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
  • Is available to do health-related lesson presentations in classrooms.
  • Observes professional ethics and confidentiality.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's or associate's degree in nursing. Pediatric experience preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

License from the State of Arkansas to practice as an LPN.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, staff, administrators, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to measure accurately, especially as applied to dosages, is essential.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to nursing program; ability to plan and implement practices based on department, district, and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
