POSITION: Senior SBA Credit Underwriter - SBA 7A & 540 Business Loans

REPORTS TO: VP, Credit Officer

LOCATION: Phoenix, AZ HQ Office (Onsite office location, NOT remote)

The Senior Underwriter (SU) for SBA 7A and 504 Business Lending, will be responsible for complex credit analysis, loan underwriting and loan packaging for the U.S. Small Business Administration s (SBA) loans and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), loans. The SU will also be required to assist in the underwriting of non-GGL loans as resources are needed to cover workflows as directed by the Bank s VP/Credit Officer and the Chief Lending Officer. The SU performs work of unusual difficulty in structuring commercial real estate, business and working capital loan transactions through various government guaranteed loan programs and/or combine non-traditional financing assistance programs to leverage traditional bank and other financing structures.

Note: This is NOT a consumer or residential mortgage position, and rather, prior experience in commercial business loans, specifically with prior SBA 7A and 504 business loan experience is required.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Serves as the Subject Matter Expert and Liaison to/for SBA and GGL Programs.

2. Prepares loan credit memorandums and recommends credit decision upon the review and analysis of the loan application package and supporting documentation.

3. Packages GGL loans for submission and obtains applicable approvals/authorizations.

4. Proficient management with interaction with CAFS/ETran portal including the resolution of screenouts.

5. Reviews the official SBA authorization and loan agreement for accuracy and to ensure the terms and conditions correspond with he approved credit approval and credit authorization.

6. Thorough understanding of GGL compliance and reporting requirements.

7. Evaluates CRE, business acquisitions, equipment, expansions, start-up, and tenant improvement project requests are in compliance with bank underwriting guidelines along with GGL requirements.

8. Analyzes and spread borrower financial data including financial statements, tax returns, projections, real estate and debt schedules, leases, credit reports, background reports, character review and resumes.

9. Reviews title reports, UCC filings, appraisals, environmental reports, and business valuations.

10. Completes industry analysis assessing and mitigating credit risk.

11. Facilitates communications and information between bank personnel, GGL offices, and third-party partners.

12. Contacts/communicates/assists GGL and non-GGL Business Development Officers to discuss issues, collect needed documentation and manage workflows from application generation through loan closing.

13. Directs and reviews proper loan documentation, both attorney-prepared and generated from LaserPro.

14. Assists in portfolio management, servicing requests, annual reviews, and special asset transfers.

15. Provides training to processors and commercial credit analysts as needed.

16. Maintains knowledge of updates to the loan policy, procedural notices, and GGL SOP s

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

1. Bachelor s Degree or equivalent related experience.

2. Minimum of five years of experience in commercial business and real estate loan underwriting specifically in SBA, USDA loans required, plus prior non-SBA C&I loan experience is preferred.

3. Prior experience in sales as a BDO or relationship management.

4. Strong knowledge and experience of GGL policy and procedures.

5. Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with prior commercial lending experience.

6. Proficient in financial analysis centered in credit quality and cash flow including accounting, spreading financial statements and tax returns.

7. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

8. Advanced understanding of borrower documentation and third-party reports such as entity documents, credit/background reports, appraisals, business valuations, title, and environmental.

9. Ability to work effectively with individuals across the bank to assist in managing internal and external relationships.

10. Ability to deliver excellent service to teammates, sales staff, and customers.

11. Ability to work in fast-paced environment while delivering accurate and quality work product.

12. Knowledge of the Southwest US area real estate markets a plus.

13. Working knowledge of workflow and underwriting platforms required, loan platforms including Spark, Abrigo, LaserPro and FIS highly desired.

14. Advanced knowledge of MS Excel and the MS Office Suite of products.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor s Degree in accounting, business or finance preferred.
  • 5 years in Commercial Banking Government Guaranteed Lending (e.g., Credit Administration, Commercial Credit Underwriting, Portfolio Management or Commercial Lending) is required.


ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 20lbs. (e.g., file boxes).
  • Must be able to sit, stand, bend and stoop.
  • Sitting/Standing for 90% of the time.
  • Requires ability to use keyboard up to 8 hours.
  • Travel may be required.
