Computational Designer (Grasshopper)

Job Details

Andalusia Design is a architectural products manufacturer looking to disrupt the commercial specialty ceilings and wall market by making bespoke, high-design wood and metal systems more accessible to the architectural and design communities. Andalusia achieves this business model by combining novel frontend design tools with on-site digital fabrication capabilities.

We are looking for a skilled, creative, and energetic Computational Designer to join our Product Development team. This role will focus on new product development, existing product enhancements, and custom architectural projects. Beyond the output of a design, you will also be responsible for the technical rigor, stability, scalability, maintainability, and manufacturability of your code as a part of a long-lived design environment. In this role, you are a key to ensuring our digital designs are optimized for our manufacturing processes and can reliably and repeatably move to production.

The Computational Designer will report to Andalusia s CTO to produce models and functions that meet the needs of our customers and our facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Translate product design concepts into robust, flexible, and deterministic computational models in Grasshopper.
  • Collaborate with the engineering and operations teams to optimize model structure and data flow as a source of truth for product specification and production.
  • Develop algorithms to support new features and parametric capabilities; implement algorithms developed by others from other languages and pseudocode
  • Apply generative design methodologies to explore and optimize multiple aspects of designs, including material usage, structural performance, aesthetics, and manufacturability. Identify potential challenges and propose innovative solutions.
  • Identify opportunities for alternate code structures and evaluate/select based on key performance criteria
  • Generate thorough documentation and comments to capture design intent and lessons learned
  • Implement and refine automation tools on both sides of the CAD/CAM boundaries to move designs cleanly and predictably between tools and ultimately to production
  • Develop and maintain modules to support core business parameters, including lead-times and pricing, based on predicted and actual production performance.
  • Support the release of curated design tools to the architectural and design community; enable clients to explore and design with autonomy within the full spectrum of our manufacturing capabilities.
  • Identify and help implement workflow improvements for collaborative development in Grasshopper and other tools.
  • Stay current with trends, emerging tech, and best practices in parametric design and architecture

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor s or Master s degree in architecture, engineering, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in computational design and parametric modeling, preferably within the architectural, structural engineering and/or product development industries.
  • Demonstrated expertise with Grasshopper and Rhino
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of one or more scripting languages within Grasshopper (eg: Python, C#) for advanced algorithm development.
  • Experience with software programs widely used in the architectural industry, including Revit and AutoCAD
  • Experience with CAD/CAM processes and digital fabrication (CNCs, laser cutters, etc.) preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Must be able to effectively interpret and integrate feedback from different knowledge domains.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
