DECKHAND RESPONSIBILITIES AND ABILITIES
- The Deckhand is directly responsible and accountable to the Vessel Master or his relief, working directly under him and following his instructions.
- The Deckhand is primarily accountable for his own health, safety, cleanliness and personal hygiene. He/she must be familiar with company policies, procedures, safety rules, and regulations and must abide by them at all times.
- The Deckhand must be able to meet Coast Guard physical standards at all times.
- The Deckhand must obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identity Card (TWIC), a Merchant Marine Credential (MMC) and Clinic Card. Failure to have these credentials in your possession when reporting for work will result in employee discipline.
- The Deckhand must be on time for crew change and cannot leave the vessel without a proper relief and without permission from the Operations Manager or Port Captain.
DECKHAND DUTIESThe Vessel Master must ensure that the deckhand performs the proper duties. These may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operational Duties
- Making up the lines for vessel handling;
- Assisting the vessel in making dockings, sailings, or shifting;
- Standing lookout; and
- Performing the various tasks necessary to carry out the above, such as making up lines, line handling, including splicing and throwing lines,
- Maintain radio watch when required.
- Maintenance Duties
- Chipping and painting vessel; and
- Other equipment maintenance as directed.
- Housekeeping Duties
- General Sanitation duties inside and outside the vessel as directed;
- Cleaning or scouring the vessel;
- Cleaning quarters, including personal quarters;
- Cleaning the wheelhouse and galley;
- Cleaning the heads and companionways;
- Prepares meals as directed by the Master of the vessel, and;
- Performing other any cleaning chores as directed by the Master.
- Safety Duties
- Reporting any hazardous or unsafe condition to the master and making "on-the-spot" corrections when capable.
- Other Duties as directed by the Master.
DECKHAND SCHEDULES- The work week and schedule may vary by location however, typically our Deckhands work a "7 & 7" schedule, which means the deckhand works seven days on the boat and then has seven days off unless they are making an offshore trip.
- During the time on the boat, the boat may be operated either 9, 12, or 24 hours a day.
- The deckhand works at least 9 or 12 hours during that period of time or as otherwise directed by the vessel's Master.
