Description

The , Facilities Maintenance Division, is seeking a full-time Custodian to clean and maintain City buildings/facilities, public areas, and surrounding grounds. The position will primarily be responsible for the general care, cleaning, upkeep, and custodial/janitorial maintenance of the newly renovated municipal building located at which is home to the Mayor & City Council Chambers, the Gaithersburg Police Department, and other City offices and public meeting spaces. The position will also assist or fill in for other custodial staff and assist with special projects when needed.

We are looking for an entry level candidate who is hard working, dependable, responsible, punctual, and safety conscious; able to deliver excellent customer service with a positive attitude; and able to work cooperatively with others and contribute to a successful team effort.

40 hours per week; work schedule upon hire is 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday; some evening, weekend, holiday, and overtime work may also be required. Work schedule adjustments may be considered as the custodial and janitorial needs for this new facility are evaluated during its first few months of operation; input from the successful candidate will be critical in determining any schedule changes that might be necessary to best meet operational needs.

Anticipated target hiring range for this position is $38,500 to $46,000; starting salary is negotiable and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Job Functions

What you will do with us:

  • Perform basic and routine custodial and janitorial work including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, waxing, buffing, and spot cleaning floors of offices, hallways, and meeting rooms; cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, water fountains, kitchen areas, and elevators; removing trash and recyclables; restocking supplies; dusting and polishing woodwork and furniture; cleaning and clearing drains; cleaning entrance windows; and cleaning light fixtures and replacing light bulbs.
  • Move heavy furniture and equipment; off-load and store/inventory supplies as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs and/or report repair needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist with setting up rooms and audio-visual equipment for meetings and activities.
  • Open and close building or facility; turn lights on/off; clean up after meetings or events; secure rooms and interior/exterior doors.
  • Monitor activities in the building and ensure security of the building after working hours or at conclusion of meetings or events.
  • Shovel snow, spread ice treatment, clear stairways and walkways of debris, and perform other light grounds maintenance work such as gathering and disposing of trash outside of buildings, weeding or watering outdoor flowers, etc..
  • Inspect building for safety hazards and correct or report to appropriate personnel.

Qualifications

What you will need to be considered:
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
  • High school diploma or GED desirable.
  • At least 3 months of previous custodial/janitorial experience.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of commonly used custodial and maintenance equipment and hand tools
  • Ability to perform work of a physical demanding nature on a consistent basis including lifting/moving objects weighing more than 50 pounds frequently.
  • The ability to read, write, speak, and understand English to follow instructions, safety precautions, and work procedures
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to complete job duties with limited supervision.
  • Must complete the International Sanitary Supply (ISSA) Cleaning Management Institute Basic & Advanced Custodial Technician Certifications within 12 months of hire.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification (may be obtained through the City upon hire).
  • Or any acceptable combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
