Overview

The Managing Director of Business and Operations (MDBO) is a confident, experienced manager and relationship builder who will oversee HR, operations, business, and administrative functions in close collaboration and partnership with the Executive Director (ED) and senior leaders.

The MDBO will serve as the primary HR, business, and administrative partner to the ED with an eye towards supporting organizational priorities and continuously improving systems. Charged with keeping broad non-academic areas of work functioning smoothly, the MDBO must be a seasoned organizational leader with excellent business sense. They must be skilled at quickly evaluating a broad range of data, variables and perspectives prior to making sound organizational leadership decisions.

What does the Managing Director of Business & Operations do?

Organizational and Team Leadership

  • Serve on the leadership team and play an integral role in developing and stewarding school culture, policies, and initiatives.
  • Oversee and organize the work of the operations and HR teams by establishing priorities and objectives, assigning accountabilities, and monitoring results.
  • Manage multiple manager- and director-level members of the operations and HR teams.
  • Serve as the school's primary point of contact with multiple service providers (e.g., legal counsel, outsourced HR consultant).
  • Serve as an internal "liaison" between critical functions, ensuring alignment and effectiveness in operations and HR and keeping the ED and senior leaders informed of critical issues.
  • Through coaching, management, and performance evaluation of direct reports, promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Represent the organization in board meetings and externally on behalf of the ED, particularly in areas of authorizer, service provider, and vendor relations.

Business, HR, and Operations
  • Support and advise managers across the organization on HR, staffing, and performance management issues.
  • Oversee human resources functions, including providing guidance to managers, leading compensation and benefits programs, and ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations.
  • Lead the development and implementation of policies in collaboration with the ED, senior leaders, consultants and legal counsel.
  • Consult with school counsel and insurance providers to ensure legal compliance and identify and mitigate risks.
  • Lead business administration functions for the school in partnership with the CFO, including purchasing, procurement, and contract and vendor management.
  • Work closely with the ED and CFO to manage contracts, expenses, and department budgets.

Compliance, data analysis, and project management
  • Lead ad hoc data projects and lead special projects that support operations, finance, and HR, as well as other functional areas (e.g., Talent, Academics, DEI).
  • Manage cross-departmental projects through all stages of work, from design to data collection to analysis to presentation.
  • Liaise with senior leaders, staff members, and service providers and translate complex issues and data into actionable insights, plans and reports.
  • Ensure compliance and reporting with state, local, and federal government laws and regulations (e.g., inspections, Annual Reports, Program Reviews).
  • Develop reports, memos, and slide decks for key partners, such as the Board of Trustees, lenders, and donors, showing programmatic evaluation and/or impact.

  • Seasoned manager, with experience supporting diverse teams to achieve results in demanding environments
  • Independent self-starter with a high degree of personal responsibility and capacity for self-managing to build structure and drive results around ambiguous workstreams
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, Springfield Prep's Board of Trustees, and staff
  • Exceptionally detail-oriented with a track record of managing a high volume of work and hitting tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree (MBA/MPA or degree in business administration preferred)
  • 7+ years of overall professional experience with 4+ plus years of broad operations and HR management experience. Finance and budget experience is preferred.
  • A track record of success overseeing HR, business, administrative, and/or operations functions in a school or similar environment.

Schedule & Compensation

The MDBO is a full-time, year-round, administrator position with generous paid time off (15 days paid vacation plus 12 paid holidays and a one-week winter break and one-week summer break each year). Limited hybrid schedules will be considered. The salary range for this position is $118,881 to $138,159, based on experience at this level.
