**Security Officer Sr. positions are available working 12 hour AM or PM shifts as needed. Not to exceed 1500 hours per wage year.**

The Safety and Security Services of Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute is responsible for providing and ensuring a safe and secure environment for all patients, employees, and visitors while on campus of the facility. This is accomplished through constant monitoring, foot patrols, vehicle patrols, traffic controls and inspections of facility grounds and buildings. This department is mandated to enforce all civil, criminal, and traffic laws of the Commonwealth, ensure compliance with the policies and procedures of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, and subsequent criminal, abuse, or administrative investigations. This department is also required to ensure compliance with all guidelines set forth by The Joint Commission, which pertain to safety and security.

The purpose of this position is to ensure the safety and security of patients, staff, vendors, visitors and their property; to protect SWVMHI property, buildings and equipment and enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, DBHDS regulations, and SWVMHI policies/procedures.

This position has been authorized on a wage (hourly) basis. Wage employees cannot exceed a total of 1,500 hours in a 365-day period. The 365-day period is considered your work year and begins on your first day of employment.

Wage employees do not have benefits, but are eligible to apply for classified positions, which do provide numerous benefits.

* Ability to work in a secure and locked environment with individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms of mental illness and/or additional forensic/legal involvement.

* Working knowledge of police methods, scientific crime detection, Court Security/Civil Process, laws of Commonwealth and of Law Enforcement administrative practices and procedures.

* Demonstrated ability to work independently using resourcefulness, sound judgment, integrity and tact. To react appropriately in routine and emergency situations; to deal effectively with patients, staff, law enforcement officials and the general public.

* Must be able to conduct thorough impartial investigations, write concise reports including the ability to process crime scenes.

* Physically able to manage, restrain, and transport aggressive/combative persons. Affect a lawful arrest without assistance, and the ability to utilize firearms.

* Safely operate a law enforcement/state vehicle.

* Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, must be able to render credible testimony in a court of law.

* Basic knowledge of human behavior, age-specific needs, and personality development

* Knowledge of basic treatment measures to promote mental health appropriate to the adult, developmentally disabled or impaired, and/or geriatric populations

* Vision and hearing adequate to recognize and respond to hazardous situations and ensure safety at facility

* Ability to observe and describe observations orally, in writing, and electronically

* Ability to work effectively with staff in a team approach

* Ability to perform infection prevention and control practices and appropriately apply standards in daily activities

* Appropriately intervene in crisis or problem situations

* Perform repetitious walking and/or standing, bending, lifting and reaching overhead to position, restrain/transfer/transport and/or escort individuals, and provide assistance with activities of daily living

**Required:**

* Computer skills

* Possess a valid drivers license without any court ordered restrictions

* Ability to work overtime in a staffing emergency

Preferred Qualifications **Strongly prefer:**

* High school diploma, GED and/or college degree

* Certification in Law Enforcement through Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Service

* Sworn through Smyth County Circuit Court as a Special Conservator of the Peace at Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute, Smyth County, Marion, Virginia.

* Successful experience as police officer with background in fire protection, security, and/or safety
