Description

Responsibilities for the Animal Control Officer include: Tracking, catching and managing wild and domesticated animals. Individual must be able to physically lift and carry animals and will be expected to transport live/dead animals. Respond to radio calls, set traps and physically chase animals on foot over unfamiliar terrain. Prepare and review reports; communicate effectively with others; operate all equipment necessary to successfully complete job duties.

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED; valid Ohio Driver's License and must be able to perform the essential functions of this position. Background in working with animals and prior experience is preferred.
Examples of Duties

  • Under general supervision, establish and enforce an effective Animal Control Program based upon City ordinances and State laws. Track and trap nuisance animals, both wild and domestic, physically chasing animals over unfamiliar terrain and carrying animals as needed. Arrange for return, removal or disposal as appropriate. Respond to and resolve calls regarding animals running at large.

  • Establish and maintain an effective public relations and education program aimed at preventing nuisance animals and creating public awareness about responsible pet ownership Conduct educational events at local schools and community organizations.
  • Enforce state and local laws through education, verbal and written warnings and official written citations.
  • Respond to and investigate reported abused or neglected animals, taking action as required by the situation.
  • Maintain animal holding area and care for animals held. Remove and dispose of dead or discarded animals.
  • Maintain equipment used for the safe capture and transport of animals.
  • Prepare and issue accurate documentation of each case and prepare summary reports as required.

Typical Qualifications

Effective oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; high school diploma or GED; valid driver's license; substantial background in working with animals, wild, domestic and livestock; some prior experience as animal control officer preferred. Ability to physically control animals, set traps, tranquilize and safely subdue unruly animals.
