Compensation: $22.00/hr

General Function:

Under the general supervision of the Airfield and Ground Maintenance Manager and the Airfield Maintenance Supervisor, performs a variety of maintenance activities to repair and maintain pavements, grounds, utilities, gates and fencing on and around the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport and associated facilities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Depending on season, operates a variety of equipment such as, large tractors, zero-turn mowers, chainsaws, skid steer loaders with various attachments, asphalt rollers, concrete saws, crack sealers, backhoes, rubber-tired front-end loaders, dump trucks, and large snow removal equipment (exceeding 26,000 lbs.) and other equipment in the maintenance of airport pavements, as well as vehicles and machines involved in airport pavement marking and related equipment to maintain Authority owned property.

Operates vehicles and equipment on controlled surfaces and communicates via radio with FAA control tower in accordance with FAR Part 139.

Performs routine maintenance on Authority owned vehicles and equipment, such as oil and fluid checks, oil changes and lubricating, and performs equipment safety inspections. Cleans vehicle cabs and bodies/beds.

Operates powered hand tools.

Maintains/repairs airside and landside pavements and drainage systems.

Installs and repairs chain link and other type fences and gates.

Performs garbage and debris clean-up on Authority owned properties, and maintains shop areas and equipment in a safe, clean, and orderly fashion.

Escorts contractors to and from various job sites within secured areas.

Assist other departments with special projects or assignments.

Other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications:

  • Must obtain and maintain airfield driving privileges and Air Traffic Control communications endorsement within 6 months of employment.

  • Must have the ability to access and operate all equipment and vehicles.

  • Must have safe work and driving habits.

  • Ability to act with integrity.
  • Ability to effectively communicate over a two-way radio.
  • Must have an acceptable and reliable means for being contacted during off-duty hours.Subject to emergency call-in requirements.


Must pass criminal history background check and maintain eligibility for a security access badge in accordance with the Airport Security Plan.

Ability to work independently and exercise sound independent judgement.

Education/Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • A Minimum of 3 years' experience in the operations of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. Experience operating equipment with a gross vehicle weight of 26,000lbs.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of general construction practices used in installing/repairing concrete.
  • Demonstrated experience operating skid steer loaders, frontend loaders, backhoes, and mowers.


The Seasonal Airfield Maintenance Technician is a Temporary Employee and will work as part of a team to maintain the grounds to ensure the safety and comfort of Authority employees, tenants, visitors, and the traveling public. Duties may vary according to job assignment. This position is a standard 1 shift 7:00AM-3:30PM | Summer Hours 6:00AM-2:30PM.

Physical/Environmental Requirements:

This position is primarily performed in an outdoor environment in a variety of climates. Involves exposure to noise, vibrations, chemical, and other contaminants, moving mechanical hazards, and extremes of temperature and weather conditions. Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses; sufficient auditory ability, with or without audio logical devices; able to tolerate exposure to noise levels up to 120 decibels; capable of being on one's feet for extended periods of time and lifting 50 pounds unassisted. Must be able to distinguish colors as required to discern light-gun signals from the Air Traffic Control Tower. This class specification should not be interpreted as all inclusive.
