Stanford University isseeking an Autopsy Room Attendant as the first staff position in the new Research Autopsy Center. This individual will carry out a variety of duties required to maintain the autopsy facility and perform nontechnical staff activities during autopsies. This employee will schedule much of their own work; results are spot-checked by the supervisor. Autopsy Room Attendant IIs may lead the work of, and guide level I employees. Duties will include work scheduled before or after regular daytime duty hours. Some though not most work may be performed remotely.

About the Lab:

The Research Autopsy Center will be the first centralized organization at Stanford to utilize postmortem tissues and organs for groundbreaking science. Fulfilling the wishes of patients with cancer and systemic diseases, it will accept donations for the collection of specimens after death. Autopsies will be performed in the clinical Autopsy suite and there will be a dedicated desk for the Autopsy Attendant near the Director's Office.

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment

**JOB DUTIES:**

* Schedule autopsies. Discuss details of consent and autopsy logistics with patients and family members with the support of the director. Interact with hospice and other caregivers for planning.

* Maintain a variety of autopsy-related records including creating research protocol documents, scanning, and uploading to create digital copies of physical records. Performs data entry tasks and annotates collected specimens. Conducts routine verification to ensure the integrity of autopsy records.

* Ensure that stocks of chemical solutions, materials, and supplies are ordered and/or prepared as needed, keeping a continuous surplus of necessary items.

* Make incisions, remove organs, close incisions. Organize and label specimens during cases and supervise and record tissue distribution to collaborating researchers. Ship samples to outside institutions.

* May guide Autopsy Room Attendant level I employees in the above duties and oversee their work.

**DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:**

In addition to the requirements for Autopsy Room Attendant I, these employees must have demonstrated ability to plan and organize their own work in maintaining the physical facilities, supplies, materials, chemical solutions, etc., for which they are responsible. They must possess sufficient knowledge of and skill in autopsy room procedures to perform the work with a minimum of error and supervision. This degree of knowledge and skill is generally associated with approximately one year's experience at the I level or equivalent. For positions with lead or overseeing responsibility, this classification requires that the employee know and apply the principles of the University's Affirmative Action Program.

**EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):**

* High School Diploma/GED required. Successful completion of college-level coursework in anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, medical terminology or related experience as acquired through at least one year of additional training or related courses/experience in laboratory, autopsy, mortuary or related.

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):**

* 1 year of related work experience required. Knowledge of general laboratory techniques including laboratory safety procedures preferred. Work experience in autopsy, mortuary science, funeral service or related laboratory preferred.

**PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:**

* Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.

* Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.

* Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds

* Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds

* Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.

* Position may require repetitive motion.

**WORKING CONDITIONS:**

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, loud noise or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.

Additional and/or Unusual WORKING CONDITIONS:

* Must be willing to work with cadavers.

* May be required to work overtime, evenings, and weekends, including holidays.
