Job Description

Based on our internal equity review process, the starting salary for this position will be $24.40
The current full hourly range for this position is $24.40 - $26.07

This position assists the Urban Forester in all aspects of arboriculture throughout the entire Parks District. Duties includes ensuring that arboricultural best management practices are followed on urban forestry projects in support of Forest/Canopy Coverage Management Plans throughout the District; as well as collect tree data utilizing geospatial application and technologies. In addition to on the ground support, this position will engage, communicate, and support urban forestry with the mission to strengthen communities and connect people to understand the importance of healthy diverse urban forest throughout Tacoma.

Position Information
Perform urban forestry duties for an assigned division/department.

In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to:

Essential Duties

  • Understand, adhere and apply urban forest management and arboricultural practices and standards.
  • Assist Urban Forester in variety of activities such as in field collecting, tree inventory data and conducting chainsaw and tree pruning workshops for Metro Parks field staff.
  • Operate trucks and equipment to assist in tree deliveries, tree planting, tree staking, tree mulching, tree watering and pruning and removing trees.
  • Perform tree inspections and document and report on site visits.
  • Lead educational programs on a variety of Urban Forestry topics with school age children.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science/Studies, Forestry, Natural Resources or related field desired
  • Two years of related experience required
  • Experience operating arboricultural equipment required
  • Washington State Driver's License and acceptable driving record required
  • Must be 18 years of age or older

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to kneel, stand, crawl, push, pull, squat, bend, stretch, bending at the waist, stooping, squatting, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Ability to operate arboricultural equipment, including a chainsaw
  • Mobility to navigate all types of surfaces and terrain, including the ability to stand and walk for extending periods of time over rough, uneven, wet, slippery, and/or steep surfaces.
  • Requires ascending/descending ladder work.
  • Physical strength and ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Pulling, pushing, carrying and lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds repeatedly in the normal course of duties.
  • Exposures to adverse weather conditions in various indoor, outdoor, and shop work environments and may occasionally require work in dirty, wet, noisy, or cramped workspaces.
  • Employees in this position are subject to fumes, dust, pollen, noise from equipment operation, and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized equipment including hand and power tools.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time while operating grounds equipment.
  • May require driving a vehicle to conduct work.
  • Ability to communicate to exchange information with district employees and customers.
  • Ability to navigate emergency situations and perform CPR.
