SUMMARY:Performs traffic control and flagging activities for Traffic Control Operations to ensure safety for workers and the traveling public in construction zones and respond to assist with roadway emergencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive.

Perform safe and orderly traffic control and flagging duties, including:

Protect yourself and the public from road construction and maintenance dangers.

Protect the work crew from the dangers presented by the traveling public.

Ensure that traffic proceeds smoothly and in a timely fashion.

Occasionally assist the work crew with the maintenance of streets.

Assist in snow and ice removal operations as needed.

Respond to emergencies as directed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is not responsible for the supervision of regular City employees.

QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the necessary functions of this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to work on call and after hours as needed.

Ability to receive, understand, and take positive appropriate action from information/instructions presented verbally and/or in writing.

Ability to remain flexible in dealing with daily changes.

Ability to remain tactful, helpful, and friendly in dealing with the public and other employees.

Ability to follow and enforce City safety regulations.

Must have a valid driver's license.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: Minimum age 18; High school diploma or GED and one to two years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: FlaggerCertification; may obtain certification through the City of Fort Collins when hired. Current Drivers License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.The employee is occasionally required to sit; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.The employee must frequently lift and/or move 10-25 pounds, regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Requires strength and stamina to stand for up to 10 hours a day on uneven surfaces. Must be able to climb in and out of equipment, ditches and trenches, use controls in light and heavy equipment operations and operate a two-way radio. Must be able to traverse uneven surfaces and terrain. Hearing and visual acuity must be sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to traffic and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
