Summary

Under general supervision of designated supervisor, perform skilled mechanical work on department vehicles and equipment. Responsible for providing excellent customer service, communicating directly and effectively with stakeholders, coordinating equipment, materials, and other resources in addition to communicating with supervisors about labor needs to meet needs and requests. Serves as a department leader and mentor to all Grounds and Events staff.

UNH Facilities is a 24/7/365 operation and this position has responsibilities related to campus safety, athletic event support and winter time snow operations. Due to the nature of our business, employees may be asked to flex schedules and/or respond to request outside of normal working hours in order to meet the demands of the University. This may include early morning, evenings, weekends and holiday work as needed.

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.

  2. Four years' experience as an automotive mechanic in a commercial, industrial or highway garage.

  1. Knowledge of methods, tools and equipment of the trade.

  2. Knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines and automotive components.

  3. Ability to read and understand electrical schematics.

  4. Knowledge of applicable codes/ordinances.

  5. Ability to inspect equipment, determine malfunction and make necessary repairs.

  6. Knowledge and ability to use computers, tablets, smart phones, and software systems to perform work duties.

  7. Ability to report to work under emergency weather conditions and work a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends during emergency and weather events.

  8. Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy work with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.

  9. Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary.

  10. Solid interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and written, to effectively communicate with customers, team members, contractors and supervisors.

Duty/Responsibility

Mechanical work and customer service

  • Perform all duties for the safe operation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of department equipment and vehicles.
  • Including but not limited to: diagnosing and repairing engine, transmission, electrical, and brake malfunctions; rebuilding and repairing small engines, carburetors, ignition, and electrical systems; tune up of small engines; repairing, rebuilding and inspection of hydraulic pumps, control valves, and hoses; repairing, rebuilding and inspection of: muffler, exhaust systems, fan belts, tires, oil, oil filters, air filters, batteries, and windshield wipers.
  • Serve as the primary authority for forecasting vehicle and equipment replacement schedules. Provide exceptional customer service by responding to requests in a timely manner, communicating status to the customer, and following up when the request is complete.
  • Using the work management software, maintain accurate records of work completed, materials used, and time expended.

Duty/Responsibility

Winter snow operations

  • Participate in the planning, scheduling, and supervision of winter snow removal/plowing.
  • Coordinate with supervisors on equipment needs for snow removal, including repair and replacement.
  • Maintain a plow route as necessary.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation for snow call back and respond to snow/ice calls, including during off hours, as needed.

  • Leadership and mentorship to the Facilities division.
  • Participate, support, and demonstrate Facilities Forward concepts and contribute to a positive work culture.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities during work activities.
  • Mentor, develop, and train turf staff and new employees.
  • Oversee and provide feedback about contractors working on campus as needed.

Safety and training

  • Follow all safety practices/policies/procedures, techniques and precautions in performance of duties.
  • Keep current on all required safety trainings, code/license updates and any certifications required.
  • Continuously seek out professional development opportunities that will benefit the University and your technical skills to stay current on technical skills and be knowledgeable of best practices, future trends and technologies.
