Job Title: Structural Iron and Steel Worker

Supervisor Title: Site Foreman

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Department: Field Operations

Pay range: $24 - $28 depending on skills and experience.

POSITION SUMMARY

The position of Structural Iron and Steel Worker is responsible for assembling, erecting, connecting, and welding steel for the purpose of building metal structures. This role contributes to the success of projects and is expected to communicate with site foreman and project leads as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assemble hoisting equipment and rigging, such as cables, pulleys, and hooks, to move heavy equipment and materials.
  • Bolt aligned structural-steel members in position for permanent riveting, bolting, or welding into place.
  • Drive drift pins through rivet holes in order to align rivet holes in structural-steel members with corresponding holes in previously placed members.
  • Erect metal and pre-cast concrete components for building structures.
  • Fasten structural-steel members to hoist cables, using chains, cables, or rope.
  • Force structural-steel members into final positions, using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks, and hand tools.
  • Hoist steel beams, girders, and columns into place, using cranes, or signal hoisting equipment operators to lift and position structural-steel members.
  • Pull, push, or pry structural-steel members into approximate positions for bolting into place.
  • Unload and position prefabricated steel units for hoisting as needed and use rope to guide them into position.
  • Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of structural-steel members, using plumb bobs, laser equipment, transits, and/or levels.
  • Cut, bend, and weld steel pieces, using metal shears, torches, and welding equipment.
  • Dismantle structures and equipment as needed.
  • Fabricate metal parts such as steel frames, columns, beams, and girders, according to blueprints or instructions from supervisors.
  • Operate equipment such as forklifts and aerial lifts.
  • Assist and comply with the overall site safety and quality programs as required and ensuring Trade employees/subcontractors compliance with GS Steel LLC standards and all applicable safety codes, regulations, and jobsite security.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers, contractors, suppliers and other employees.
  • Ability to travel and accommodate night and weekend work as needed.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Display a high level of teamwork, integrity, commitment, and leadership in daily operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

An Ironworker must be able to perform any and/or all the below. listed activities in order to obtain employment at this trade. These are the most basic tasks that an Ironworker must be able to perform. Each job site is different so other situations may require additional physical requirements.
  • Lift - able to lift 5-50+ pounds from the ground to overhead or side to side.
  • Carry - able to carry materials on shoulder on back to locations onsite
  • Push or Pull - able to push or pull materials into position
  • Climb - able to climb up rebar walls, tower cranes, ladders, and structural columns at a height of 40ft or higher
  • Kneel - able to kneel down on concrete floors
  • Crawl - able to crawl on hands and knees for welding and finishing rebar work
  • Bend or Stoop - able to maneuver for rebar tying and miscellaneous work
  • Body Positions - able to hold materials above head for extended periods, lay on stomach or back for welding and other miscellaneous work
  • Strong Grip - able to apply a strong grip for grabbing and rigging up materials
  • Balance and Coordination - able to balance and walk across beams at 500ft off the ground
  • Hearing - able to hear calls on the site from flaggers and riggers.
  • Strong Speaking Voice - able to make calls on the site to flaggers and riggers
  • Good Sight and Depth Perception - able to see materials and how far they are
  • Strong Lungs - able to handle some smoke or dust on the job site
