Sydecar is a frictionless deal execution platform for venture investors. Our platform handles back-office operations for venture investors, automating banking, compliance, contracts, tax, and reporting so that customers can focus on making deals and building relationships.

We're a tight-knit early-stage team that's focused on delighting our customers. You're joining early, so you'll have a big part in shaping how we work and who we hire.

Building a strong culture is important to us. We're a distributed team with physical offices in the SF Bay Area, Seattle, and Houston. We reinforce these commitments to team-building through quarterly off-sites, relocation benefits, and work-travel opportunities when face-to-face collaboration is necessary.

The ideal candidate is based near where we already have team members (SF, LA, Seattle, Houston), but we are open to a primarily remote engagement.

About the Role

The core mission of the executive team is to execute on an ambitious roadmap to build the most intuitive, compliant, and stable method of executing alternative asset investments. Our VP, Legal will be focused on ensuring our products are not only compliant, but also cutting edge from a regulatory perspective.

The role will span legal research and thought leadership to product innovation, with an opportunity to add value to every aspect of our operation. You will work closely with Sydecar s CEO and Head of Product to ensure our suite of products and services adhere to the highest-level of federal, state, and international compliance, all while exploring creative methods to reduce friction for our users and ensuring our team always stays on the cutting edge of our industry.

What You ll Do

Contribute directly to innovative fund structures and shape Sydecar s current and future products.

Work on a range of matters such as securities and regulatory compliance, negotiating, reviewing, and drafting commercial agreements.

Educate and respond to external inquiries regarding our fund products.

Assist in managing and building a growing multidisciplinary team.

Advise executive members on changes in law, regulation and best practices that impact the business.

Build and maintain a referenceable knowledge base to educate our stakeholders with respect to:

Why our products are designed the way they are.

Why we use specific language in our product.

What laws affect the business

Manage outside counsel, as necessary.

Analyze legal issues through risk assessment, risk management, and pragmatic decision-making lenses and provide actionable solutions, rather than simply identifying areas of a potential legal risk.

About You

Deep expertise in the range of securities laws impacting venture funds and FinTech platforms more generally, including the Securities Act, Exchange Act, Investment Company Act, Investment Advisers Act, and FINRA Rules.

Excellent strategic thinking, solid judgment, and the willingness to work with business partners to make decisions that are grounded in a practical application of the law, the technology, and the business goals.

Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, innovative, rapidly changing environment, and getting up to speed on new areas of law quickly and effectively, and comfortably in a startup business environment.

A JD from an ABA-accredited law school and an active bar license in good standing with 5+ years of legal practice experience and extensive in-house experience in the FinTech or venture capital space.
