Introduction:

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), in partnership with the Harvard College Observatory, forms the globally recognized Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). The CfA leads in the exploration of the universe, combining research in ground-based astronomy, space-based studies, scientific instrumentation development, and science education improvement. Funded primarily by government and Smithsonian grants, SAO's research is at the cutting edge of astrophysics.

Summary:

The Research Proposal Development Administrator will spearhead efforts to secure extramural research funding, fostering relationships and strategies to enhance the CfA's competitive edge. This role entails close collaboration with the SAO Executive Team to refine funding strategies, oversee proposal management, and pinpoint funding avenues, offering comprehensive support from grant writing to project consultation.

Major Duties:

- Strategize with scientists on grant portfolios in line with SAO's goals.

- Identify and distribute funding opportunities, aiding in the development of competitive proposals.

- Draft proposals, manage documentation, and ensure timely submissions to maximize funding success.

- Provide non-technical components for proposals, align budget justifications, and develop career support resources for scientists.

- Manage internal research funding opportunities and maintain communication with all stakeholders during the proposal process.

Qualifications:

- Proven experience in research program administration, with a knack for managing complex projects and strong communication skills.

- Ability to handle multiple projects, build stakeholder relationships, and facilitate team collaboration.

- Familiarity with funding agencies, proposal submission processes, and grant administration policies.

- Expertise in developing compelling grant proposals and coordinating research-related workshops and seminars.

This position demands a blend of organizational skills, project management expertise, and the ability to navigate research funding landscapes, aimed at advancing SAO's research initiatives.
