Job Details

The primary purpose of this University police Department is to enforce local, state laws, and to protect lives and university property; patrol the campus, to prevent crimes through high visibility; to investigate crimes occurring on the campus and to respond to emergency situations.

Sworn officers within the police department have the powers and authority vested in peace officers as authorized by the General Statutes of North Carolina. Such powers and authorities are granted for the purpose of enforcing North Carolina state laws, 74G, preserving peace at the University, suppressing disturbances, preventing crimes, and apprehending offenders.

Description of Work

This position performs sworn law enforcement duties on the campus of Elizabeth City State University, on all Elizabeth City State University Property, within the territorial jurisdiction of the agency, and other State and local facilities when requested. With full powers of arrest, this position enforces State, Local and Federal Laws. Positions have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within an established jurisdiction. Work involves patrolling an assigned area, responding to student, faculty, and staff complaints, addressing routine calls for service and assistance, proactive detection of violations of the law and ECSU applicable regulations. Duties include apprehending observed violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints in order to assess and handle cases, collection and preservation of evidence and the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings and performing related work. Position will support community engagement activities to help build and maintain a rapport with all students, faculty, and staff, and any other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.

Minimum Training and Experience

High School diploma or GED. At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of ECSU's designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers. Lateral hires who are already certified NC law enforcement officers and not first hired as a Police Officer Trainee may be assigned this classification conditional on successful completion of the field training program designated by the Chief of Police. Out-of-State lateral hires must be NC CJETSC certification eligible.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission
