The Position

We are looking for 16 full-time, non-benefited, seasonal summer Highway Laborers. Positions include: Weed Control, Work Zone Flagging, and Road Maintenance and Repair. Preference will be given to college students studying in Project Management, GIS/Mapping, Engineering, Environmental or related fields and for experience in general labor.

Successful applicants will perform duties including document scanning, removing noxious weeds, sign maintenance, flagging, crack sealing, patching, mowing & other general labor. Work is performed under the close supervision of the assigned supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
Minimum requirements are:

  • High School Diploma or GED and
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Must be at least 18 years old by May 31, 2024
Job offer contingent upon successfully passing a drug screen.

Qualification Requirements

Essential Functions
Maintains roads; repairs potholes; patches roadways; seals cracks in roads.
Performs work zone flagging for construction and maintenance operations.
Assists surveyors in survey work for land, highway, bridge construction, and road maintenance projects.
Assists in replacement of roadway signs.
Clears trees and brush from road right-of-way.
Mows, trims, and weeds grounds at Highway Shop.
Assists in the inspection of construction projects.
Completes materials testing for construction projects.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Some knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures of the work; some knowledge of surveying methods; some knowledge of specialized equipment used in performance of duties assigned; ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling, frequently requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
