Pittsburg State University invites applications for the position of Groundskeeper in the Physical Plant Services & Grounds department. The primary function of the Groundskeeper job is to manage and maintain landscaping requirements of assigned areas by keeping the grounds clean of trash, debris and anything else that could upset an otherwise orderly condition.

Duties and Responsibilities

40% Landscaping/Hardscaping

• Performs various tasks in major and minor landscape construction projects and related work
• Prepares planting areas; transplants and plants trees, shrubs, flowers, ground cover, bulbs, and turf, cares for same during establishment period by watering, mulching and fertilizing
• Installs hardscape items such as bike racks, trash containers, landscape fabrics, support stakes, retaining walls, brick pavers, patio stone and drainage systems
• Replaces, maintains and adjusts sprinkler heads, monitors conditions, programs and adjust irrigation schedules in irrigation controllers
• Propagates and cares for bedding plants in greenhouse, then plants and cares for them in the garden beds throughout the growing season. Also renovates, weeds and mulches shrubs and annual beds year round.

25% Groundskeeping

• Performs grounds tasks such as mowing grass with riding and push-type mowers, operating edgers, and spin trimmers and blowers
• Using various power and hand tools, trims shrubbery, prunes trees, tills and plants flower and shrub beds, scrapes ice, hand shovels snow and manually applies ice melt material to stairways, ramps, and walkways as needed
• Keeps walks, drives, window wells and building entries clean and clear of debris
• Picks up litter and trash daily
• Maintains and cleans tools, vehicles, and storage areas
• Moves picnic tables, furniture, stands, and other heavy items
• Mixes paint, measures and marks athletic fields and completes preparations and cleanup for games
• Moves tables, chairs, barricades, and other equipment for events; cleans up after events
• Empties small trash containers
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

25% Miscellaneous Equipment Operation

• Operates 1-ton and 2-ton trucks with dump beds
• Operates tractors with various implements: tiller, aerifier, leveler, turf-vac, grader blades, high-pressure sprayer, and seeder; operates skid-steer loader (with attachments), excavator, fork-lift, pick-up truck and other mechanized equipment in performance of tasks related to grounds maintenance and landscape construction
• Makes minor repairs and preventive maintenance to grounds equipment
• Loads, hauls and spreads gravel, soil, asphalt, and mulch materials
• Trims trees and removes trees and shrubs using chain saws, bucket truck, loaders, and trucks
• In lawn areas and athletic fields, prepares the soil, lays sod, seed and over-seeds

10% Chemical Spraying and Fertilizing

• Using tractors and utility vehicles, spreaders, hand, boom and high-pressure sprayer according to instructions and label warnings
• Applies fertilizers and chemical pesticides to ornamental plantings, shade trees, and turf areas
• Handles, disposes of and stores chemical concentrates and solutions in proper and safe manner

Education and Experience

Required Education and Experience at Hire -

• High school diploma or equivalent
• One year of landscape experience

Salary Range: $12.65 - $16.06

Job Type: Classified

Appointment Duration: 12 months

Work Schedule: Full Time - Monday through Friday
