Job Description

SUMMARY

Performs duties and otherwise assists in the care and maintenance of College grounds and buildings at assigned locations. Work is often performed in harsh outdoor weather environments including sun, heat, cold, snow, wind, rain, etc.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • *Mow and fertilize turf, apply pesticide, and perform general grounds maintenance. Operates the necessary equipment needed for these tasks including, but not limited to, riding lawn mower, tractor, front end loader, back hoe, dump truck, roller, power sprayer, stump grinder, cherry picker, vehicle trailer and various other utility vehicles with attachments.

  • *Remove snow from roadways, parking lots, walkways, and building entrances. Operate the necessary equipment needed for these tasks including, but not limited to snowplow truck, salt spreader, front end loader, MT trackless vehicle (or "sidewalk" machine), snowblower, hand shovel.

  • *Clean, inspect, and maintain grounds equipment, tools and vehicles. Follow basic maintenance procedures as listed in each equipment operator's manual. Basic tasks include but are not limited to: checking fluids, lubricating wear points, sharpening mower blades, adjusting mower deck height, calibrating spreaders/sprayers, etc. Report any equipment

  • problems to the supervisor.

  • *Collects and disposes rubbish daily.

  • *Weed eradication (spraying & pulling), fertilizing, reseeding and watering of turf.

  • *Install and maintain flower beds including edging, mulching, planting, and weeding.

  • *Install, maintain, transplant, and remove shrubs, hedges, trees and other plantings.

  • *Maintain and repair athletic fields. Measure and paint (or chalk) lines as needed.

  • *Operate and adjust turf irrigation systems

  • Paint outdoor items including but not limited to: curbs, crosswalks, posts, and traffic marking lines in parking areas and pavement.

  • *Maintain and repair sidewalks, secondary roads, and parking lots.

  • Works under the direction of Maintenance Mechanic(s) on large projects as required.

  • Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to the essential functions of the position.

  • Demonstrates regular attendance.

  • Accesses and utilizes College-prescribed software programs, including but not limited to training, email, payroll and maintenance management system.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • High School diploma or GED.

  • Two (2) years of work experience in the care and maintenance of grounds including turf and flower beds.

  • Two (2) years of work experience in operation of various types of grounds keeping and snowplowing equipment

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

  • Ability to properly use related equipment.

  • Ability to read and follow detailed work and safety instructions.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Skills in keyboarding, basic math and grammar, and basic or standard word processing (MS Word) and/or spreadsheet applications (MS Excel).

  • Proficiency with an email software package (MS Outlook) and the Internet.

  • Valid Ohio Driver's license.

  • Must be able to meet College insurability requirements.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must have sensitivity to respond appropriately to the needs of a diverse population.

Preferred

  • Associate's degree in a job-related field.

  • Experience snow plowing in a commercial environment

  • Commercial Pesticide Applicator licensure.

  • Experience in pruning trees and shrubs.

  • Experience in maintaining athletic fields.

  • Experience with electronic work order system.

  • Trade licensure or certification.

  • LTO (Lift-Truck-Operator) license.

  • Ability to perform work in welding.

  • Completed vocational or apprenticeship program

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to occasionally climb or balance, taste and smell. Must be able to regularly stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear. Must be able to frequently reach with hands and arms. Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds without assistance. Must be able to occasionally work in wet or humid conditions, work in high places, work with toxic or caustic chemicals and bio-hazards. Must be able to frequently work with fumes or airborne particles and vibrations. Must be able to frequently work near moving mechanical parts and in outdoor weather conditions. Must be able to work in an environment with a loud noise level. Work is often performed in harsh outdoor weather environments including sun, heat, cold, snow, wind, rain, etc.

Special Note: This is a Part-time AFSCME Bargaining Unit position, Grade 4, 1st shift. AFSCME Employees employed with Community College will be considered first for vacant positions. Target Hiring Rate: Minimum rate $22.71 /hr
