The City of Ottawa, Kansas is recruiting for a Utilities Maintenance Worker I. The Utilities Maintenance Worker I makes repairs and performs maintenance on all aspects of the water distribution and sewer collection system.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist in the maintenance, installation, and repair of water and sewer mains.
- Locate and mark underground water and sewer utilities.
- Assist in the operation of heavy equipment such as backhoe, trencher, tamper, jackhammer, cut-off saw, trucks, camera van, and augers.
- Flush and chlorinate water lines to protect the health of the public.
- Communicate with the general public and respond to inquiries/problems with water and sewer utilities.
- Assist in making taps of new water service lines, repairing hydrants, and replacing water valves and meters.
- Notify supervisor of need for maintenance and repair of equipment.
- Inspect sewer lines using camera van.
Ancillary Job Functions:- Serve on 24/7 on-call rotation and respond to emergencies after hours and on weekends.
- Keep paperwork up to date and report regularly to supervisor.
- Comply with all City ordinances and policies.
- Assist other departments and perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: (Combination of education, training, and experience will be considered)
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must obtain a valid CDL, Class B, with airbrakes and tanker endorsements within the first six months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (not all inclusive)
- Knowledge of water and sewer distribution/collection systems.
- Knowledge of water and sewer construction materials, measurements, and equipment maintenance.
- Ability to operate job-related equipment as detailed in Essential Job Functions.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees, City officials, business entities, and the general public.
- Ability to use good judgment and think quickly and rationally in difficult or stressful situations.
Work Environment:- May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, or high/dangerous places.
- May be exposed to wet/humid conditions, inclement outdoor weather, vibration, mechanical oils, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, potentially hazardous bodily fluids, potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents/chemicals, or very loud noise levels.

- Must be able to talk, hear, grasp, push, stand, walk, drive, reach with hands/arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, operate mechanical equipment, and move up and down from/to sitting position on the floor.
- Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement and manual dexterity.
- Must have precise hand-eye coordination, clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, and ability to identify/distinguish colors.
- Must be able to occasionally lift 100 or more pounds.
- Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
Starting Rate: $20.21 per hour
Range: $20.21 to $22.23 per hour

Hours: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday - Friday. Overtime and emergency call-outs required.
Residency: Regular full-time employees are required to establish and maintain residency within a driving distance of 35 miles of Ottawa City Hall within one year from hire.
