A Police Officer's typical duties include patrolling the City of Wentzville and performing a variety of tasks, including investigating crimes, responding to citizen complaints and requests for assistance, and enforcing laws. This position is tasked with the deterrence and prevention of crime through patrolling assigned areas, responding to notices of disturbances, mediating disputes, conducting searches, observing suspicious activities, and detaining suspects. A police officer educates the public on crime prevention and protective tactics through the explanation and enforcement of federal, state, and local laws. Under general direction, is responsible for a specialized work of considerable difficulty requiring a high degree of independent judgment and expertise.

Qualifications

Job Qualifications Education, experience, and training required or desirable to effectively perform the job at the time of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require the approval of HR.

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must pass a comprehensive background investigation.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Police Academy graduate or Missouri Peace Officer Certification (POST) required.
  • Valid drivers license required.
  • Two years of related experience desired.
  • Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice or a related field desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with this position.
  • Maintain continuing education hours annually as required by the Missouri POST Commission.
  • Knowledge of the layout of the City.
  • Proficiency in the use of basic business software (word processing, spreadsheets, email, presentations) and essential office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively and to de-escalate tense situations as they arise.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work and concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to use good judgment and think quickly in difficult or stressful situations.
  • Ability to identify potential liabilities and minimize negative exposure.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential job duty.
