Background

About Cai Guo-Qiang: For decades, Cai Guo-Qiang (1957~) has been globally acclaimed for his art, notably his unique explosion events utilizing gunpowder such as the Bigfoot s Footprints fireworks (2008, Beijing Summer Olympics) and Sky Ladder (2015, Quanzhou). His vast artistic output spans a range of creative mediums including painting, installation, video art, and performance art, to new technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), NFTs, blockchain, and artificial intelligence. As of April 2024, the artist has realized more than 650 exhibitions, including ~120 solo exhibitions including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum in New York (a retrospective), and the Palace Museum in Beijing. The artist has

created more than 7,700 works on record, published 92 exhibition catalogues, and produced more than 1,900 documentaries of varying lengths.

About Cai Studio: Founded by Cai Guo-Qiang and his wife Hong Hong Wu in the 1990s, Cai Studio provides all around support for Cai Guo-Qiang s rich creative output, especially surrounding the realization, presentation, circulation, and development of Cai s artworks. In addition to maintaining a complete and unique sustainable ecosystem for Cai s work, the studio serves as the artist s sole representative for all business matters (in the intentional absence of gallery representation). The studio currently maintains two locations, one in the East Village, New York (office designed by OMA) and one in Chester, New Jersey (workshop and office designed by Frank Gehry). The studio has ~20 employees, split into four departments.

About cAI Lab: Originating from artificial intelligence research that began in 2017, the lab is a core component of the studio. It was developed in 2023 based on the multimodal artificial intelligence model cAI (pronounced AI Cai), which was tailor-built by Cai Guo-Qiang and his team. cAI s model was trained on Cai s existing artworks, archives, and areas of interest. It also simulates ancient and modern figures the artist admires to create different debating personalities, who form an independent and free community. cAI is not only an artwork of Cai s, but also a collaborator and partner in dialogue for the artist. Under the guidance of the artist and his studio, and through the commissions of top international art institutions/brands, cAI has launched/realized a series of important projects. In the future, the AI may create work independently.

The Lab takes Cai s decades long pursuit of creativity and quality as a jumping off point, utilizing cAI as a platform to explore pioneering and hyper-original applications of cutting-edge technology in the creative fields. Through continued cooperation with the world s top art institutions and brands, the lab will continue to develop the cAI IP, with the goal of establishing a globally iconic art and design brand focused on the applications of AI in creative fields. In the future, cAI Lab is envisioned to run and operate as an independent company.
