Signal Technician


Job Details

The purpose of this classification is to install, maintain, and repair the traffic control system for the City of Albany and Dougherty County.Installs traffic and pedestrian signals; maintains existing signal system equipment; programs timers/controllers for intersection signal systems; repairs damaged equipment.

Designs and builds projects to upgrade existing computer system; designs and builds electronic equipment; builds new signalized intersections; re-designs existing signal system as required; bands and tunes sensor loops.

Repairs and maintains computer input/output equipment and interconnect cable between intersections and computer.

Installs and maintains fiber optic and copper communication cables on pole lines and underground.

Designs and builds projects for other city departments as directed.

Operates bucket truck, trencher, concrete saw, jack hammer, jig saw, sharp shooter, weed eater, rotor hammer, power drill, volt meters, cable puller, wire stripper, crimper, and other hand tools in the performance of duties.

Performs inventory of parts, equipment, tools and supplies to ensure that proper resources are available to complete assigned work; initiates requests for new or replacement materials; organizes and stocks service vehicles for daily work and emergency calls; transports necessary parts, equipment, tools and supplies to job sites.

Receives, reviews, prepares and/or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, work orders, logs, maps, plats, drawings and manuals pertaining to signal system operation and maintenance; processes, forwards or maintains as appropriate.

Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service and/or information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals; investigates and resolves complaints as needed.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, city/county departments, vendors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

May instruct laborers and trainees, assign work, coordinate activities, and review work-in-progress

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Answers telephones and relays messages as needed.

Cleans and maintains shop area, vehicles, and lawn.

Performs other related duties as required.High School diploma or GED required; supplemented by Vocational/Technical diploma in electronics, electrical wiring, or related field required; additionally, one year previous experience and/or training involving basic electrical and electronic devices required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.Data Utilization: Requires the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require oral communications ability.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.
