SUMMARY

Individual performs general, technical & investigative law enforcement duties to protect life and property while enforcing City's laws and orders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING DUTIES. ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS MAY BE IDENTIFIED BY THE CITY AND VARIOUS TASKS MAY BE ASSIGNED UNDER EACH ESSENTIAL FUNCTION. THOSE THAT ARE LISTED UNDER THE EXAMPLES OF WORK ARE NOT ALL INCLUSIVE; THEY ARE EXAMPLES ONLY AND MAY BE AMENDED OR ADDED TO AS NEEDED BY THE CITY.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Examples of work performance in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following tasks. These tasks may be amended, or other tasks may be assigned as necessary.
  • Patrol assigned areas and beats of City to protect life and property; to preserve law and order; prevent or discover crime and to assure law enforcement activity efficiency; enforce traffic and parking regulations; and enforce MS state code and city ordinances.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations of crimes, accidents, and other minor criminal activities; search for and preserve evidence at the crime scene; questions suspects, witnesses, and victims; make arrests if necessary.
  • Exercise attention to detail in criminal/accident reports
  • Interacts positively with the public.
  • Able to observe an area; identify colors; judge space & distance and vehicle speed.
  • Transport prisoners: act as court bailiffs and may testify in court.
  • Make suggestions to superiors to improve and/or enhance operating policies and procedures; implement and enforce departmental directives.
  • Respond to calls and complaints involving fires, vehicle accidents, robberies and other types of misdemeanors and felonies.
  • To assist in presentations and educational programs to the public and other government officials about police function and enforcement.
  • Accurately prepare written reports and other forms; write violation citations; perform minor clerical duties.
  • Check equipment and vehicles for operational efficiency and safety prior to use.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional management of privileged information.
  • Practice safety measures


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory responsibilities.

INCUMBENT PERFORMS OTHER JOB-RELATED TASKS AS ASSIGNED AND REQUIRED; ANY DUTIES/TASKS INCLUDED IN THE EMPLOYEE'S PERFORMANCE EVALUATION ELEMENTS ARE ESSENTIAL TO THAT EMPLOYEES POSITION WITHIN THE JOB CLASSIFICATION.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Minimum High school graduate or GED

Police academy graduate within the first year of employment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of modern principles, law enforcement and limitations of departmental authority

Knowledge of federal, state, and municipal criminal laws, codes, and ordinances

Working knowledge of equipment, tools, and vehicle

Knowledge of City personnel policy and the department's GOG

SKILLS

Perform and take risks in dangerous situations serve the public, responsible for their general safety.

Organization and record keeping skills.

Skills in use of variety of firearms; accurate marksman in stressful situations & care of firearm

ABILITIES

Able to think, then quickly and calmly in developing and/or emergency situations.

Able to maintain composure with people in heated, difficult situations.

Able to analyze situations quickly and objectively.

Able to meet and effectively deal with public officials and citizens and to exercise tact and courtesy with the public.

Able to express ideas clearly and concisely -both oral and in writing.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Successful applicants will have NO previous convictions for felony crimes, or misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence or possession of illegal narcotics. Applicants must also have a social security card, valid driver's license, and a clean driving record with no convictions for DUI.

Certified applicants will agree to participate in

Physical and psychological examination

Thorough background investigation

Interviews with the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, and Mayor

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

These physical requirements are not exhaustive and additional job-related physical demands may be added to these by the city of the need arises. Corrective devices may be used to meet these physical requirements.

Able to meet medical and physical standards as required by MS Police Academy.

Require considerable physical stamina in working in dangerous/hazardous conditions.

Work may require strenuous exertion under adverse conditions as well as periods of extended periods with little diversion.

Vision: able to perceive & discern objects with eye including reports, maps, vehicles, etc.

Motor coordination: eye-hand coordination. Requires use of fingers and hands to work radio & telephone; equipment controls; hand arms. Will frequently stand, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or bend.

Speaking/Hearing: ability to give and receive information through speaking and listening. Presentation skills required to speak to civic & school groups about crime prevention.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Hostile situations and high-stress situations involving life & death as well as hazardous factors which may include exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials, i.e., human blood, narcotics & gasoline.

Noise level varies from quiet very loud.
