Description

The Deputy Sheriff position is responsible for general law enforcement duties including, but not limited to, enforcement, apprehension, investigation, conflict resolution, civil process, evidence collection, court testimony, court security and transportation services.

Essential Duties

Patrol Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, other law enforcement agencies, other County divisions and the general public;
  • Maintains high morale, positive attitude and professionalism at all times;
  • Evaluates and analyzes emergency situations and solves problems effectively;
  • Analyzes facts, exercises sound judgment and coordinates efforts to resolve problems;
  • Works independently, without direct supervision;
  • Interacts with all people, including suspects/detainees, on a fair and impartial basis and in strict confidentiality as required;
  • Assesses and prioritizes work effectively;
  • Responds to calls for assistance by citizens in distress or other public safety agencies within Renville County;
  • Enforces all laws, including but not limited to, county and city ordinances, State and Federal laws and statutes, traffic laws and motor vehicle regulations;
  • Conducts preliminary investigations of crimes and accidents and provides follow-up investigative work as needed;
  • Conducts the investigation of crimes to include such activities as interviewing suspects, witnesses and informants, dusting for fingerprints, tracking the location of suspects, gathering information, photographing crime scenes and other related activities;
  • Responds promptly to emergencies, including but not limited to motor vehicle, home, firearms and recreation accidents, as well as fires and/or medical emergencies such as sudden illness, injuries and accidental deaths;
  • Administers first aid and/or CPR until medical personnel arrive on the scene;
  • Serves arrest warrants, subpoenas, civil papers and other documents as assigned;
  • Transports prisoners to and from jail, other jurisdictions as well as psychiatric patients and/or inebriated patients to facilities for treatment and/or detoxification;
  • Provides courtroom security and maintains discipline in courtrooms;
  • Performs self-initiated activities, including but not limited to patrolling streets, roads and highways to observe suspicious persons or actions for the purpose of protecting people and property by preventing crimes and enforcing statutes and ordinances; patrolling snowmobile trails, lakes and rivers in Renville County to ensure compliance with laws; investigates, watches for and seeks out wanted or missing persons and property;
  • Remains alert and ready at all times evaluating suspicious and potentially dangerous behaviors and/or situations
  • Conducts sales of real estate and personal property in accordance with foreclosure laws;
  • Performs various administrative and specialty assignments as directed, such as: community-oriented policing initiatives, canine handler, emergency response unit (SWAT), drone pilot, public assistance fraud prevention investigation and/or court security;
  • Plans and participates in directed patrol activities as assigned;
  • Attends community meetings and answers questions related to various law enforcement activities and/or programs;
  • Resolves and mediates disputes in citizens' homes, places of business or other public gatherings;
  • Answers citizens' requests for information including directions, regulations, ordinances, and where to obtain additional information;
  • Responsible for crowd control at community events;
  • Maintains county-owned equipment such as vehicles, firearms, emergency equipment and uniforms;
  • Attends and completes all required and on-going training, keeping current on office policies and procedures as well as local ordinances and State and/or Federal law changes and applications;
  • Consistently communicates with other staff members to share and keep current on areas of concern, suspect information, etc.;
  • Maintains proficiency with all issued weapons, use of force and first aid;
  • Prepares court testimony and testifies credibly in court regarding investigations procedures, information and evidence collected;
  • Prepares technical documentation and/or reports used for formal complaints, prosecution, etc.;
  • Prepares accurate and complete reports, logs and records relating to law enforcement activities
  • Informs supervisor of unusual events;
  • Assists as needed in Dispatch Center and Jail.


**K-9 Program:
  • May be selected to be an Office K-9 handler, which entails being responsible for the handling, daily care and ongoing training of Office canine animal. Includes responding to calls for K-9 assistance (while on or off duty) and conducting public presentations concerning the Sheriff's Office K-9 program.


**Fraud Prevention Investigation:
  • Conducts investigations into complaints charging recipient fraud in welfare-related cases;
  • Scrutinizes financial assistance files and obtains information to determine type of fraud involved and the possible criminal charges
  • Interviews program recipients and applicants, their relatives, neighbors, acquaintances, employers, etc. through field visits to secure information related to the investigation
  • Contacts all sources that may have pertinent information in support of an investigation, including law enforcement agencies, Human Services, finance companies, utilities companies, post offices, etc.
  • Prepares concise factual reports for each investigation, including steps taken, visits and contacts made, witnesses questioned, statements and affidavits taken and facts established
  • Locates and searches public and private documents in order to locate an individual or extract pertinent information.
  • Testifies before administrative or judicial proceedings regarding investigation.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:
  • Two-year degree in law enforcement or related field and the successful completion of the Skills Program;
  • one year of experience working in a related job involving public contact;
  • Experience as a police officer preferred, but not required;
  • Must pass a physical and psychological background investigation.
Must be POST license or POST license eligible by August 1.
Selection Process

Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications may be invited to an interview held via Zoom.

For those selected, second round interviews will be held in person at the Government Services Center.
