General Summary

Posting will remain open until filled.

Positions at this level lead assigned personnel performing various custodial and housekeeping duties. Regularly assigns, instructs and checks the work of others. Interviews and recommends selection of applicants, conducts training, assigns and schedules work. Custodians may be directed by public safety personnel to secure windows and doors, unlock doors, and ensure that building alarms are activated. Custodians may be required to drive to satellite locations. Custodians will assist with event set ups/take downs.

This position is a classified full-time position and eligible for overtime. Shift: Mon. - Fri. 4:00 pm - 12:30 am

SALARY INFORMATION: The above salary range reflects the starting step of Range 37 (Step C) for this classified position and includes a 5% King County compensation provision. As a new employed classified employee, based on annual increments, it will take 5 years to reach Step L on the salary schedule. This does not reflect any contractual changes, legislative mandated salary increases or Cost of Living Increases (COLA's) that may be approved in the future.

Essential Tasks

Under the direction of the Custodial Service Manager, this position will:

  • Oversee staffing in buildings and areas of responsibility;
  • Assign, instruct and check the work of employees;
  • Conduct inspections of assigned areas to determine if cleanliness standards are met and resolve problems;
  • Evaluate the performance of employees against established standards and make recommendations for improvement;
  • In conjunction with Custodial Manager, develop and evaluate performance measurement indicators;
  • Provide feedback to Custodial Manager on day to day custodial activities;
  • Coordinate staffing and oversight of special cleaning projects;
  • Prepare work schedule of assigned personnel;
  • Instruct employees in proper cleaning techniques and safety practices;
  • Maintain compliance with applicable policies and procedures;
  • Interview personnel being considered for employment;
  • Use MS Suite, especially Word and Excel, and the college's online timecard system;
  • Coordinate set-ups and take-downs for special events during the week and on weekends;
  • Assist in maintaining budget control for labor and materials;
  • Prepare a variety of reports such as analysis of custodial workloads, service requirements, and employee job performance;
  • Ensure that cleaning equipment is maintained in proper working order;
  • Prepare orders, maintains stock and issues custodial supplies;
  • Identify, report, and take corrective action to resolve custodial/light maintenance problems;
  • Report and act-upon building security, maintenance, and potential safety hazards;
  • Establish the location of records, collection points and collection schedules relating to material recycling programs;
  • Support and explore new and existing green cleaning practices;
  • Participate in college initiatives such as committees, panels and accreditation activities;
  • As assigned, meet with vendors to learn about new products, makes product tests and recommends purchase of equipment, supplies and machinery;
  • Perform the duties of a Custodian 2;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Ability to:
  • Use tools and equipment to resolve minor maintenance problems;
  • Define cleanliness standards;
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair work;
  • Lead and direct the work of others;
  • Fluently speak, write and read the English language, for receiving and reading instructions for cleaning and chemical handling, and radio and emergency communications;
  • Work in an inside and/or outside environment;
  • Work in inclement weather;
  • Work in a multicultural environment.
Knowledge of:
  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS);
  • Hazard Communication Standard (HCS);
  • Safety Standards;
  • Green Cleaning Standards.

Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or GED equivalent; AND
  • Two years experience in custodial, general or building maintenance; AND
  • Six months experience in a lead position.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
