Join the City of Brevard Police Department as a Police Cadet and become a full-time employee while attending the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program. City of Brevard Police Cadets will be provided with tuition, fees, uniforms and equipment necessary for the academy, along with a being paid as a full-time employee with benefits.

The next Training Program is scheduled to start either July or August 2024. Individuals are encouraged to apply as soon as possible, as our hiring process can take from 2 - 4 months. Candidates who are hired will be expected to begin work for the City one to two weeks prior to the beginning of the BLET Training Program.

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give you the essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with the state, county, municipal governments, or private enterprises. This program-certification is a prerequisite to be a sworn law enforcement officer in the state of North Carolina. Successful graduates are qualified to take the state certification examination.

BLET consists of 36 separate blocks of instruction such as firearms, driver training, motor vehicle law, and arrest, search and seizure. The BLET course is filled with practical exercises and an extensive ethics section that is woven throughout the training experience.

Upon successful completion of the BLET certification course, individuals would then be promoted to a role as a sworn police officer for the City of Brevard. Failure to graduate from BLET within the prescribed training period could be cause for termination. Applicants who are selected and hired through this program must commit to a two-year service agreement with the Brevard Police Department.

Examples of Duties

  • Attends and successfully completes Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T); obtains a probationary law enforcement certificate.
  • Participates in educational training and successfully passes tests, no deficiencies.
  • Performs assigned tasks as instructed.
  • Participates in role playing scenarios during class.
  • Gains knowledge in the investigation of crimes and accidents.
  • Gains knowledge in preparing accurate and thorough incident, accident, and arrest reports,
  • Gains knowledge in developing skills needed to prepare cases and testify in court.
  • Assists with other assigned duties and activities such as special events and administrative duties outside of the classroom instruction and training.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school or GED.

Must possess or be able to obtain a valid North Carolina Driver's License and complete all required physical and educational requirements of the North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Curriculum.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the
  • Must be at least twenty years old by the time of taking the state exam.
  • Not have committed or been convicted of:
    • A felony; or
    • A crime for which the punishment could have been imprisonment for more than two years; or
    • A crime or unlawful act defined as a "Class B misdemeanor" within the five-year period prior to the date of application for employment; or
    • Four or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as "Class B misdemeanors" regardless of the date of conviction; or
    • Four or more crimes or unlawful acts defined as "Class A misdemeanors" except the applicant may be employed if the last conviction occurred more than two years prior to the date of application for employment.
  • Satisfactorily pass background investigation, psychological evaluation, and drug screen.
  • This position is considered to be safety-sensitive and is subject to random drug testing.
Failure to graduate from BLET within the prescribed training period could be cause for termination.

Full-time employee regular employees are eligible for the following benefits
