Description

Performs intermediate technical work troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, or replacing instruments used for water and wastewater treatment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Instrumentation Technology Manager

Examples of Duties

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates, and/or replaces process instruments for water and wastewater treatment systems.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and/or replaces programmable logic controllers (PLCs) components; troubleshoots communication systems for lift station and water telemetry.
  • Calibrates safety gas monitors, personal and permanently installed systems; calibrates State reportable instruments including flow meters, temperature, chlorine, and turbidity.
  • Specifies and procures materials for use and maintaining a spare part inventory.
  • Interfaces with vendors, contractors, supervisors, all operations departments, and engineering to insure continued correct operation of all pump stations, lift stations, water and wastewater plants and telemetry systems.


Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience
Associates/Technical degree with coursework in electronics and/or instrumentation, or related field and moderate experience working with electronics, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of the use of electrical and electronic test equipment, basic hand tools, troubleshooting techniques.
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Office and Operating System software products.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, process instrumentation and pneumatic diagrams, technical manuals; use various levels of math to calculate unit conversions, flow rates, ratios, and percentages; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and management.
  • General knowledge of water and wastewater systems, radio communication systems, programmable logic controllers, variable frequency drives are a plus.

Physical RequirementsThis work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer generated data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electrical shock and occasionally requires working in wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is frequently in a loud noise location (e.g. operating facilities).
